Prayer on Trial

  Wednesday, November 6th 2013

Madalyn Murray O’Hair.
When and how should Americans pray? The Supreme Court is about to decide. Two curmudgeonly women – JUST TWO DISGRUNTLED WOMEN!!! – may turn the tide of religious freedom for 300 million Americans.  Our high court is about to tell the people of Greece, New York, and the whole country for that matter, what prayers are permissible because of a lawsuit filed by Linda Stephens and Susan Galloway. These are the words that upset them:
Be Thou present, O God of wisdom, and direct the councils of this honorable assembly; enable them to settle things on the best and surest foundation. … that order, harmony and peace may be effectually restored, and truth and justice, religion and piety, prevail and flourish amongst the people. … All this we ask in the name and through the merits of Jesus Christ, Thy Son and our Savior.

Of note is that these words, delivered by a pastor speaking to the Greece Town Board, came from the opening prayer of the Continental Congress in 1774, delivered by Jacob Duche, rector of Christ Church Philadelphia. What’s been okay for 239 years may soon be illegal. The issue comes before the Court today to determine what exactly was meant by the “establishment clause” of the First Amendment:  “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” We’ve been on this slippery slope for a long time, and not just since 1963 when another Jezebel, Madalyn Murray O’Hair, had prayer thrown out of public school. In the 1971 Lemon v. Kurtzman case, the Court said that prayers associated with government must have a “secular purpose” and cannot “advance religion.” In the name of all that is rational and sane, how can prayer that is at all meaningful have a “secular purpose?” And what’s the point of praying if it isn’t to “advance religion?” It’s true that the Obama administration defends the use of legislative prayer, such as in the Greece NY situation, but only because it is “Congress’ tradition,” not because prayer is actually believed to be effectual in any real way.  As followers of this ministry know, I’ve spend a lot of time the past couple of years ministering in the former Soviet Union and Russia. The fervor for God in that part of the word, and the freedom to pray, eclipses that of America. We should be ashamed that those bound by a century of atheism now love God more than some in America, and they are willing to say so publicly without government interference.

An encouraging word: GOD ENDURES
Not much in our world lasts long, but “the Lord shall endure forever” (Psalm 9:7).  As society and government rapidly moves further and further away from God, it’s comforting to know that He hasn’t moved. The Almighty is not affected by the petulance of man’s arrogant desire to rid Him from our daily lives. While America disregards God’s law to a greater extent with each passing day, we need to be reminded of the rest of this verse: “He has prepared His throne for judgment.” We need it written large over the entry to every building of our government: HE WILL ENDURE AND HE WILL JUDGE!

Jerusalem’s Curse?

  Tuesday, November 5th 2013

Piece of lead upon which ancient curse was inscribed.

On October 3, 2013 I reported on the discovery of an ancient curse found in Roman ruins  (CLICK HERE to read blog). Now, yet another archaeological find has revealed a similar malediction also inscribed on a lead tablet. The October blog was about a curse directed toward a veterinarian for some unspecified malady. The latest find comes from a dig in Jerusalem, unearthed in a collapsed mansion dating to around 1,700 years ago. In this case gods such as Hermes, Hecate and Abrasax are invoked, using Greek and some Hebrew words for extra effect.  The sender of this imprecation wanted to “nail down” the tongue and eyes of one named Lennys. The curse called on the powers of four religions, including Judaism, Greek mythology, Babylonian worship, and even the heretical Gnostic sect of Christianity. Scientists believe that in performing the curse the sender of the evil would likely have used an actual hammer and nails in the lead piece to enforce the curse’s consequences.  Archaeologists excavating the mansion in which the curse was found believe that the tablet of intentional evil was deliberately placed in a second floor room where the recipient of the curse might live or frequent.

Not much has changed. Those who schedule Personal Encounters with me often tell of torment from unspecified sources. Upon further investigation, and sometimes interrogation of evil spirits, we learn of deliberate curses put on their ancestors. Among recent cases I have witnessed are these; a man sprinkling the bed of his brother with small quantities of human blood to cause disease; an ancestor 20 generations ago performing a human sacrifice out of greed, resulting in the corruption of wealth; an ex-spouse going to a voodoo witchdoctor in New Orleans to curse his ex-wife with torment so that no other man would ever want her; a mother-in-law asking a psychic for help with a curse to kill her son’s new wife. These are real cases that we “unearthed” in our spiritual “digging.” If these individuals had not come to me, or someone adept in doing deliverance, their misery would have continued. But each of these individuals was set free to live a new life, free from the curse. I’m not sure the same could be said for Lennys whose effigy was nailed in lead.

An encouraging word: REJOICE!
Yesterday was one of those days when I didn’t feel much like praising the Lord; probably a combination of fatigue and stress.  Then I remembered the words of Phil 4:4 – Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! No way, my emotions said. Then I remember the several times that I’ve visited Paul’s prison in Rome, just a hole in the ground leading to small room not much bigger than most bathrooms today. It was solid stone on every side. Cold. Damp. Dark. Beyond miserable. If Paul could take pen in hand and, in those circumstances, tell the Philippians to always rejoice, perhaps I should praise the Lord for just this one day. The results were amazing. Try it.

Witchcraft’s Allure

  Monday, November 4th 2013

Promotional poster for witchcraft TV show.

Novel on which TV show about witches is based.

Halloween has come and gone, but witches aren’t going away. The lure of the supernatural has become embedded in our culture, especially with young women who feel empowered by it. FX network has a series entitled American Horror Story: Coven that focuses on youth witchcraft with themes of voodoo. Lifetime Channel has Witches of East End based on the novel by Melissa de la Cruz with immortal, Long island witches as characters. The latter features demons I’ve dealt with frequently, including Balder and Loki.

What’s this all about? The key seems to be sexuality and power. No longer are witches dangerous but erotic and relational. We’re way beyond Bewitched and Buffy just like today’s vampire fascination has moved beyond Dracula to blood lust sensuality. Today’s witches don’t have ratty hair and long nails but high heels and tight dresses. They are more likely sexy teens than wrinkled hags. They manipulate the supernatural and are charming to boot. Says Owen Davies, professor of social history at the University of Hertfordshire and author of America Bewitched: The Story of Witchcraft after Salem, “There have been studies of girls who were interested in witch shows in the 1990s, following how many went on to become practicing wiccans.” Bingo! And that’s just part of the devil is up to.

While the idea of girls taking charge of their lives with the supernatural powers of witchcraft may be a theme resonating with television producers, it’s a plot line hatched in Hell. According to writer Ruth Warburton, author of Witch Finder, “Increasingly, we’re trying to bring our daughters up to believe they can be the leader; they can have the adventure; they can do the cool stuff and one thing about witches is that they allow you to explore that moment when girls become teenagers and realize the power they have as women and how exhilarating that can be.” Exhilarating and damning. Granted, one book or TV show with a favorable bent to witchcraft won’t necessarily lead to demonic possession. But it is one more open door of our society inviting in evil spirits. One too many of these cultural touchstones in the life of an impressionable teenage girl may be the final permission Satan is seeking to destroy their lives.

An encouraging word: OVERCOME EVIL WITH GOOD
It might be supposed that because I constantly deal with demons my life is a little depressing. Imagine with regularity uncovering the seamier side of life and confronting despicable schemes of Satan. How do I survive emotionally and spiritually? By remembering the words of Romans 12:21, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Acts 10:38 says that Jesus “went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil.” The best way to get one’s mind off the overwhelming sense of evil around us is to do good in the name of God.

Snake Therapy?

  Wednesday, October 31th 2013

Snake “therapist” prepares her “assistants.”

Customer undergoes session. Like to join him?

If you haven’t yet heard about this, you will. Things really are getting a lot like the days of Noah. (Gen 6:5 –The LORD saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. NIV) From the “what will they think of next?” category comes a new form of “relaxation” therapy – snakes crawling all over your flesh.  Right now it’s only available in the Far East, but unscrupulous entrepreneurs are undoubtedly looking for a way to bring it to America. The idea is that the movement of the snakes triggers adrenalin from the fear and that positively affects the customer’s metabolism. In reality, the one animal God cursed to crawl on the ground some now want slithering over their bodies. (Cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. Gen. 3:14) Spare me the exegesis, I take this literally.

Today, Halloween, people are looking for imaginative ways to stoke the fear factor. TV networks are featuring non-stop fright flicks. Theatrical haunted houses are trying to scare the living daylights out of paying customers with ever more gruesome and realistic horror. But trying to up the hormone rush of fear for any reason isn’t smart. God gave us our fright-and-flight response for self-preservation, not manipulation. Demons do that, and one of the most powerful evil spirits is that of Fear. I’ve often said, “If you have the spirit of fear [exposed in 2 Timothy 1:7] you don’t need any other demons.” Fear is a gatekeeper letting other demons in. this Halloween, focus on “power, love, and a sound mind,” not terror. And stay away from haunted houses, real or fake, and snake therapy. You don’t need a dose of fear to feel good. You need faith in Christ to be free from slithering spirits.

An encouraging word: WELCOME CHRISTMAS
Today climaxes the season of all things scary. Tomorrow the skeletons come down and the tinsel goes up. Hooray. Good riddance to Halloween and welcome the Christmas season. Not everything about Christmas is good, the commercialism etc., but it’s a great change from the darkness of October 31. The way the two seasons contrast says a lot about what they represent – horror v. hallelujahs. So get in the spirit of Christmas and tell those trick-or-treaters that the babe in the manger is born and He came to destroy the works of the devil’s day (1 John 3:8).

Ouija Board History

  Wednesday, October 30th 2013

The very first Ouija Board in 1891. One can only imagine
how many demons have been conjured since then.

As a fitting footnote to the Halloween season a recent article in the most-serious publication Smithsonian detailed “The Strange and Mysterious History of the Ouija Board.” The story described how the device was first marketed as the source of answers to questions “about the past, present and future with marvelous accuracy” and promised “never-failing amusement and recreation for all the classes,” a link “between the known and unknown, the material and immaterial.” The Board was actually patented and cost only $1.50. Cheap way to become demon possessed!

Official approval by the U. S. Patent Office.

Interest in the Ouija Board grew out of the spiritualism craze of the mid-1800s. Sances were in vogue and this “talking board” fit right in. Even Abraham Lincoln’s wife, Mary Todd, was talking to spirits in the White house. Ouija was just one more way of contacting the “other side” to talk to the dead. According to research the very name “Ouija” came from a medium who asked the device what it wanted to be called. The patent was achieved when the chief patent officer demanded proof of the Board’s viability; it promptly spelled out the officer’s name, which was unknown to the applicant. The initial investors were taken over by a man named William Fuld, who became associated with the Board’s fame. He died after a freak fall from the roof of the Ouija Board factory, a building the Board had told Fuld to erect. By 1967 two million Boards a year were selling. Then the movie The Exorcist featured a demon coming from a Ouija  Board and the demonic link was cemented.

Willam Fuld who made the Ouija Board famous.

Scientists say the planchette on the Board moves by what’s called the ideometer effect, undetectable, unconscious, small muscular movements. Perhaps, in some cases.  But like The Exorcist film, I’ve encountered countless cases of real, documented demonic possession resulting from playing with Ouija. These Ouija demons manifested clearly and vocally, and wouldn’t leave until their host renounced the Board. Think what you want, but PLEASE stay away from the “mystifying oracle of Ouija.” You get more than an intriguing answer to your question.

An encouraging word: SATAN WANTS YOUR FAITH
Faith is a critical element of Christian living. The word appears countless time in both Old and New Testaments. Without faith you can’t please God (Heb. 11:6) but with faith you can be saved (Eph. 2:8). Faith brings fulfilled promises, healing, hope, and deliverance. In the hometown of Jesus he couldn’t do many miracles because of unbelief. It stands to reason that if God wants your faith, Satan does too. Faith in horoscopes, fortune telling, sances, psychics and so on. To whom will you direct your faith?

Demons for Children

  Tuesday, October 29th 2013

  Bookstore display of occult
children’s books.

Blood-sucking vampires made
acceptable to children.

Who would imagine that your local Barnes and Noble bookstore could be a den of demons for children? I like bookstores, including Barnes & Noble. I’m a reader and writer. Barnes and Nobles has some great stuff. They sell my books. I’d go in more frequently, but I’m tempted to buy more books than I can afford. Sunday, our youngest child was looking for a book and wanted me to take her to the store. While in the children’s section I saw something that made my blood boil. I already knew that the publishing industry had targeted young children for occult-themed books; I just didn’t know how bad things had become. Books designed by demons were everywhere, especially this Halloween season.

  Making ghosts/demons
seem friendly.
Book promotes young girls talking to the dead.  Inside of “Girl Meets Ghost” makes necromancy cool to kids.
Girl in ghost book is really a witch, suggesting children can
explore witchcraft as a fun pastime.

One display island was piled with dozens of titles, all of them potentially injurious to the spiritual health of a child. Some encouraged divination, others witchcraft, fear, necromancy, ghosts, zombies. Everything demonic you could imagine had one or more titles written for children. The photos below, along with the captions, speak for themselves. This is what America has come to with our departure from a biblical world view. You and I must prepare the next generation to wage spiritual warfare against the outcome of kids reading books like these!

Sign on top of books displayed.

An encouraging word: TAKE A STAND ON HALLOWEEN
My blog today highlights what happens when a nation turns its back on God. All that is evil is no longer eschewed. It’s eventually embraced. Even occult practices once considered spiritually deadly become a playground for children.  This Halloween is your time to take a stand. Don’t be embarrassed to say your kids won’t trick or treat. Don’t be intimidated to dress up in hideous, even murderous, costumes as I saw the Duck Dynasty Family do the other night on TV. “Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord” (2 Cor. 6:17).  Make that your mission on October 31.

Demons in School

  Monday, October 28th 2013

As other students look on, the two allegedly
demon-possessed girls in Kenya leave school.

Mike Landsberry,
murdered Nevada teacher.

It happened in the far away east African country of Kenya, a place I’ve visited and ministered in many times.  According to a Nairobi newspaper report, two teenage girls were sent home from school because they said that they had demons and were devil worshippers. School officials insisted they see a doctor but the girls refused and were sent home. A school official said they were only suffering from a “mysterious disease,” but the principal of the school wasn’t buying that explanation.  Dinah Ketter, the principal, said, “What these two girls are suffering from is not a medical but a spiritual problem.” Just imagine an administrator in an American school saying that.  There’s more. The school’s PTA chairman Josephat Serem said the girls should be given a second chance as they have been “delivered.” In our country, A.C.L.U. lawyers would be rushing to file suit and the National Educational Association would be calling for the immediate firing of the principal.

As I have often noted, beyond the shores of America, in places like Africa, South America, and Asia, the idea of demons and the spirit world isn’t looked at as skeptically as it is here. The rationalistic West has denied both the reality of God and demons and we have been left with a moral vacuum. As a culture we feel no longer accountable to a transcendent deity and we can’t figure out the cause of the unspeakable violence that plagues our schools, like 12-year-old, Jose Reyes, who last week in Sparks, Nevada shot a teacher and a 14-year-old boy. To suggest that the devil had anything to do with it would bring whoops of laughter from the liberal media and bemused stares from even members of the clergy.  But how else do you explain this violent act from a young many who worked in his family’s restaurant, played the trumpet, and rooted for the San Francisco 49ers?  I don’t know what really went on in that Kenya school, but I suspect the truth wasn’t far from what the girls claimed – they were involved in some kind of Satanism and got demons. Could similar scenarios be happening in America? Of course, but don’t say so too loudly or the thought police may pay you a visit.

Thought police from Minority Report . . . Coming Soon?

An encouraging word: WE HAVE ANSWERS
In a world that denies the reality of God and the devil, Christians have a forceful message to convey. The Bible alone gives us a true understanding of evil’s origin and the hope of humanity to overcome all that isn’t good. It’s simple. Satan fell, Adam sinned, and it’s been downhill ever since. But Christ came, died on the cross and conquered our iniquities by the shedding of His blood. Society at-large may be confused about the causes of misfortune and wonder how to handle the craziness of our times, but as Christians we have an Anchor and we have answers. Go share those answers with others!

Preachers of L.A.

“Preachers of L.A.,” move over. (We’re talking the new Oxygen Channel reality TV series.) With all your Bentleys and bling, you’ve got competition. Your economic excesses, bragging rights to materialism in the name of God, and questionable lifestyles are being upstaged by a German Priest. Sure, you brag about living in Malibu and tell your critics to buzz off. (“The conversation should no longer be about whether it’s of God and all this kind of stuff and whether God is going to pass judgment – no no no.” – Deitrick Haddon, one of the show’s stars.) Sorry to tell you that you’ve been upstaged by a German Bishop who just remodeled his house for $42 million, at the expense of the Catholic Church. That earned him a suspension from none other than Pope Francis. The priest, Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst, filled his new abode with priceless artwork and a $20,000 bathtub. In Franz’s case, the money came from the Catholics of Germany who are required by law to pay up to 10% of their income to support the Church. In case of the LA Preachers, there’s no such extortion, and no Pope to yank their chain and call a halt to the madness.

Now I’ve admittedly only seen one episode, which sickened me enough to avoid watching again. Do we really need cameras behind the scenes as these self-indulgent preachers lay bare their personal problems, including the inability to sustain relationships and promiscuous dalliances leading to illegitimate children? One outspoken black pastor, Michael Fisher of the Greater Zion Church Family of Compton California, put it this way: “They are giving the world ammunition to shoot back at the church and not accept the message that it is trying to convey. They’ve sold out. It will call for pastors all over the country to have to defend their integrity because these men have decided to chase their dream of being in the public eye.”

The architect for the German Bishop’s residence says he was told by the potentate priest, “Create a house of God that will still be full of dignity in a century — no limits on spending.” That’s the same attitude on the “Preachers of LA,” that they are somehow entitled to live high and loose without criticism. No one begrudges them living well for working hard. The “laborer is worthy of his hire” (Luke 10:7); but there is a point beyond which it’s distasteful for a preacher on national TV to brag about his “Bentleys and bling” as if he deserved it for being a pastor. You and I are not the ultimate judges of the priest in Germany and the preachers in Los Angeles, but in an age when an economic collapse has devastated the financial dreams of so many, some moderation seems in order. Too bad there isn’t a Protestant Pope to take action. In the words of a publication known as The Log Angeles Wave,” This is a hit on the church, an institution that is in “rehab.” The church is trying to rehabilitate itself from the very type of imagery that this show projects, of the jack-leg, over-materialistic, skirt-chasing, prosperity-preaching con men that television evangelism has projected for three decades. Well, “Preachers of L.A.” just brought it back. Preachers fighting and arguing on television, in between getting in their Bentleys and Benzes, is not the depiction the struggling church wants to project.”

An encouraging word: THE BIBLE AND EVOLUTION
Psalm 8:3 declares, “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place…” You probably know the rest of the passage about David standing in awe at the wonders of the universe and of man as God’s creation. Focus on this first part that declares God made the heavenly bodies with purpose and wonder. David realized that God was sovereign over his life because He is the source of all that exists. There was no evolutionary ascendancy of man from something lower to something higher. Man was created higher to begin with. As verse five of this chapter says, “You made him [man] a little lower than the heavenly beings [angels].”

Vampire Babies?

Get ’em while they’re young. And what better way for Satan to corrupt a generation than to introduce the youngest, and most innocent, to blood-sucking vampire babies. Harry Potter got kids into witchcraft. Twilight introduced teens to occult romance. The littlest ones are next with books like Vampire Babies. Amazon.com promotes the book by saying:

When Tootie gets her first teeth, it’s clear to her big brother that she’s no ordinary baby. But how to convince Mom and Dad?
It happens overnight: little sister Tootie goes from cuddly, ga-ga-googoo, I-want-my-ba-ba baby…vampire baby. Now she’s sinking her pointy fangs into everything – furniture, toys, and especially her big brother (“Youch, Tootie! No bite!”). Mom insists that it’s just a phase, but Tootie’s brother knows better. Just look at her hairline! Or the fact that all her favorite foods are bloodred! With perfect comic timing, Kelly Bennett and Paul Meisel give a fresh slant to the new-baby story, proving that even monstrous little arrivals have a funny way of staking their siblings’ affections.

“Perfect comic timing?” This is supposed to be funny? LARSON’S BOOK OF WORLD RELIGIONS, my 575 page analysis of alternative spirituality (order by CLICKING HERE) has a major section on the phenomenon of vampirism. In addition to assessing the history of belief in vampires, the book also details the reality of genuine cults dedicated to blood sharing. Certain Satanist sects practice ceremonial blood consumption to enforce their dedication to Lucifer. Other self-styled vampire groups draw blood as a precursor to sexual orgies. Since the “life is in the blood” (Deut. 12:23-24) and God has condemned the deliberate use of ritualistic blood, both curses and demons can be transmitted by blood sharing. Vampire novels have no place in the life of a Christian! If you have them, throw them out. Then seek help for deliverance for what you may have allowed into your life. Forget about Buffy. You’ll need an exorcist to slay your vampire demons.

An encouraging word: PRESUMPTUOUS SINS
What opens the door to addiction in a Christian’s life? Psalm 19:13 says, “Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me.” Presumptuous sins are those that you know are wrong before you do them. Have you ever thought, “I know this is wrong, but I can do it and later repent?” This is yielding your will to the enemy. If you continue, this sin will gain “dominion” over you, meaning it will get to the point that you (outside of God’s intervention) will be unable to resist it. This is how every addiction takes root! Stop addiction in its track. Repent (turn around) BEFORE you sin!

Irish Exorcists

A recent news article says it all with the headline: Growing demand for exorcist priests in Ireland: Specially trained priests now available to cast out spirits. The admission that exorcism priests are in need and being trained is the good news; the bad news is that the photo above is not an abstract, artsy view of the clergy. This picture is purposeful to hide the identity of the priests doing exorcisms. Exorcism is still deemed by the Church to be something kept clandestine and out of public view. The report accompanying this photo says that “At least three practicing clergymen have been taught how to perform the ancient ritual on people who believe they have been possessed by demonic spirits.” Three? That’s not exactly a cause for celebration in a Catholic nation of nearly five million people. Our average DWJD (Do What Jesus Did) deliverance team (we have 600 worldwide and 100 in North America) certainly has more than three people able to cast out demons. I’m not making light of this positive step forward by Catholics in Ireland, but the desperate need for those trained should be more like 300 priests.

That’s why our International School of Exorcism was started, to raise up an army of spiritually educated individuals who have learned the crucial elements of confronting evil spirits. Training Christians in spiritual warfare is crucial to the survival of Christianity in the face of growing political and cultural hostility. Our instruction isn’t just about casting out demons. It’s also focused on preparing ordinary lay people to help friends and family members who are bound by spiritual oppression. Everyone reading this knows someone, in or out of your immediate bloodline, who needs deliverance. The signs are there: addictions which can’t be overcome by rehab alone; abusive and self-destructive behavior which repeats itself generation after generation; sickness, disease and death stalking far more family members than statistical averages would explain away.

If you’re not enrolled in our School of Exorcism, a Bible College of Spiritual Warfare, call today for details regarding our new, temporary scholarship program. You’ll be amazed at how affordable enrollment can be. Exorcism and deliverance are not difficult. I’ve spent decades learning it the hard way, without anyone to mentor me, so I can now teach you how easy it is to set free those you love. The Lord has given us the command; He has given us the power in His name. This is something everyone can do and should do. If you doubt that, call today 303-980-1511 and speak to one of our enrollment specialists today. Let’s stop hiding the face of exorcism and bring it into the open and shame Satan into retreat.

An encouraging word: DWJD TEAM SPOTLIGHT – NASHVILLE

You are a part of helping those in need in Northern Ireland! Donna Varno, of Freedom Keepers (our “Do What Jesus Did” team in Nashville, TN), recently traveled to Belfast to spend eight days ministering to survivors and victims of the institutional abuse that happened in children’s homes across Ireland. What stood out the most in meeting with the survivors is that the majority were not aware that they could find an end to the torment that they have suffered for decades.  As the truth of deliverance becomes more well known, there will be a greater need for trained exorcists in that area. (Even though Donna has been ministering deliverance for 12 years, she is enrolled in the inaugural year of the International School of Exorcism in order to become as proficient as her mentor, Rev. Bob Larson.)  For more more on what the Lord is doing in Nashville through DWJD in Nashville, see http://freedomkeepers.net
