Privacy?

Thursday, November 21st 2013

“Every step you take, every move you make, I’ll be watching you.” Perhaps Sting, who was singing those lyrics while still with The Police, should license his song to our government’s National Security Agency, which we now know has been snooping illegally on the lives of private citizens. Worried Americans have been bombarding the NSA with an increase of 888% of “open-records” requests to find out what the NSA knows that it shouldn’t.  In case you aren’t aware, the people you pay to protect you have been snooping without consent into your emails, phone records, and whatever they could get their hands on in the name of “national security” to supposedly fight terrorism.  But the erosion of privacy goes further than that. Police are starting to wear video cameras on their uniforms. Drones are taking photographs overhead of whatever they want to, so be careful sun-bathing in your back yard. Wearable cameras are being embedded in clothes for surreptitious surveillance. The new Google Glass will allow anyone walking down the street to gaze on you and, by voice command without your knowing it, instantly identify you by accessing algorithms in a universal data base.  We are nearing a world where your every movement could be tracked all the time.

Even the most casual of Bible readers knows that the reign of the Anti-Christ will be achieved by intrusive surveillance of humanity. His control over the population will meticulously monitor the movements of every citizen. How else could he determine who has the right to engage in commerce of any kind (Revelation 13:17)? We are now told that these advances in snooping technology will make the world safer, help catch criminals, assist with Amber Alerts, and aid with medical science. Sure, there are benefits any time privacy is surrendered, but the help that these tactics provide also takes away our liberties. We all need to speak up before the concept of “personal space” is a thing of the past. From a biblical standpoint we can’t permanently stop the march toward Armageddon, but we can slow it. We are to “occupy” until the Lord comes (Luke 19:13). I believe that means fighting every unreasonable erosion of our privacy.

An encouraging word: OPTIMISM OR PESSIMISM
It seems in life that we often have only one of two choices about what happens. Assume the role of an optimist and believe things will get better no matter what, or believe the worst is about to happen because Murphy’s Law all too often seems to prevail.  But there is a third choice, Romans 8:28: And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Christians shouldn’t be either full-ledged optimists or depressing pessimists. We are simply believers who trust the Lord to bring the best in all things as we patiently wait for His purposes to be fulfilled.

Leadership Lessons

Wednesday, November 20th 2013

Our neighbors in Canada have lately been giving us some valuable lessons on what leadership isn’t, how not to run a city, and who not to vote for. Normally, news from up north gets buried behind the obituaries, unless they are having an Olympics or sending a Polar Express storm our way. But most cable news networks in the U.S. haven’t been able to resist beaming live feeds from the chambers of Toronto, Ontario’s City Council chambers. That’s where an unsightly saga has been playing out, a real-life melodrama featuring that city’s disgraced mayor, Rob Ford. After consistently denying moral lapses for years, Ford has now openly admitted to driving while drunk, buying illegal drugs, and smoking crack. He’s been actually caught on camera hanging with gang members, threatening to murder a man, speaking salaciously about his private sexual activities, and engaging in alcohol-fueled rampages of profanities. Other council members have voted by a wide margin to all but fire him, yet Ford says he’s staying on the job no matter what. What’s really embarrassing is that Ford is a fiscal conservative that a Tea Party member could love. Morals aside, he’d vote with Republicans any day, were he an American. Meanwhile, he makes Bill Clinton look like an altar boy.

Scripture has much to say about leaders like this. Proverbs 17:7 warns, “Arrogant lips are unsuited to a fool–how much worse lying lips to a ruler!” “By justice a king gives a country stability,” adds Proverbs 29:4. The good people of Toronto would do well to head the wisdom of a leader named Solomon, the smartest man who ever lived, who also wrote, “Through the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is destroyed”(Proverbs 11:11). There is more at stake here than the embarrassment of a metropolis or a nation. A leader should exemplify the best of what the citizenry ought to strive for, not lower the barrier of political expectations. Ford says he’s doing his job and deserves to stay on the job. But the “bully pulpit” of leadership is as much about how those in power live as it is what they do politically. Their lives need to preach a message of sobriety and decency for the next generation to admire. Leadership is about more than a job description. It’s also about obeying the same laws a leader is sworn to uphold.

An encouraging word: WIPE THE SLATE CLEAN
While using the lavatory on a plane this week, I noticed the hand soap provided by the airline. It was called Philosophy, and the label said, “With clean hands we find our grace. We realize the slate can be as clean as we allow it to be.” I have no idea whether the company bottling the soap is expressing a New Age sentiment or a biblical world view, but the words are Scriptural. Grace is wiping the slate clean. Isaiah 1:18 puts it like this: Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. It’s a good idea to wash your hands in the lavatory. It’s a great idea to wash your soul in the blood of Jesus.

Origin of Life

Tuesday, November 19th 2013

Take that Tina Turner line, “What’s love got to do with it?” shift it a little and you’ve got “What’s luck got to do with it?” That’s a question that more and more scientists are asking. We now know that the entire universe looks like either a grand design or a very, very lucky accident. In article in aeon Magazine, writer Tim Maudlin notes, “Theories now suggest that the most general structural elements of the universe – the stars and planets, and the galaxies that contain them – are the products of finely calibrated laws and conditions that seem too good to be true. What if our most fundamental questions . . . have no more satisfying answer than an exasperated shrug and a meekly muttered ‘Things just seem to have turned out that way’?”

Maudlin’s observations are based on a lot of what ifs that populate our lives. What about the confluence of your parents, the egg and sperm they contributed to make you? Did that just happen? Science says the chance for you to exist at all has a factor of 10 to the 27th power, an unimaginable number. In short, you were very unlikely to be born, statistically speaking.  If one throws out the idea of creation, that you and I are the real reason the universe exists, you are left with the idea that mere chance caused the nuclear reactions of the stars to bring about life. Even if you accept that an accidental cause resulted in human existence, you then have to explain what was behind the carefully calibrated coincidences that made it all happen. The evolutionist is left to define life as a fortuitous circumstance. A wondrous accident, but a capricious product of arbitrary conditions of the universe. As Maudlin, who doesn’t believe in a Divine origin of man puts it, the Big Bang theory of energy density requires that if you “pack the energy too densely . . . the universe will eventually re-contract into a big crunch; spread it out too thin and the universe will expand forever, with the matter diluting so rapidly that stars and galaxies cannot form. Between these two extremes lies a highly specialized history in which the universe never re-contracts and the rate of expansion eventually slows to zero. In order for the standard Big Bang model to yield a universe even vaguely like ours now, this particular initial condition had to be just right at the beginning.”

All this is another way of saying, “In the beginning God . . . ” Someone had to be there, some power outside the hydrogen and helium was present guiding the process. Why then is it so hard for scientist to accept a Creator? They already have faith in capricious processes. Should it be so hard to have faith in Intelligent Design?

An encouraging word: THE BEGINNING OF CREATION
Long ago, by God’s word the heavens existed (1 Peter 3:5 NIV). That simple statement is cosmologically profound. It flies in the face of atheists and evolutionists who want us to believe that the universe is an accident, that it just happened by luck. How long ago is “long ago” we don’t know, but the Bible does tell us that there was a time when the cosmos existed, created and sustained by the Word of God. We don’t know the exact chronology of how we got from there to here, but we do know Who started it all. That gives life meaning and purpose that a Big Bang never can provide.

Demonic Ingenuity

Monday, November 18th 2013

Demons plan strategy against mankind.

Perverse. Sinister. Cruel. Even diabolical. Descriptions of the devil usually emphasize his evil nature, but the Wicked One and his minions are seldom seen as ingenious. And adaptable. But as I was thinking back over some of the evil spirits I’ve encountered in recent weeks I was struck by how clever the devil was to have embedded in unique aspects of an individual’s ancestry, hiding in strange and undetected places.  Consider these cases as examples of demonic ingenuity:

LILITH – The Jewish demon, which I describe as “Jezebel on steroids,” causing relationship difficulties that few would see as demonic in origin.

INSANITY – Mental illness caused by an evil spirit destroying the entrepreneurial enthusiasm of a man slowly going insane while masking it with alcohol addiction.

KING OF BABYLON – A 200 generation spirit rooted in ancient human sacrifice to an earthly king, inhibiting the life of a woman from succeeding in relationships.

MILITARY – The name taken by a demon causing strife and anger, passed on by a long history of family members proudly choosing military service but who ended up killing for personal bloodlust.

PISCES – A demon of astrology cleverly invested in a Christian woman’s fascination with her zodiac sign, even though she didn’t “really believe” in astrological predictions and knew it was unbiblical.

Of course, with my busy schedule of almost daily Personal Encounter sessions with troubled souls, I could give hundreds, if not thousands, more examples. But these few, culled from recent exorcisms, provides some insights into the unusual and crafty ways that Satan operates through possession. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour, 1 Peter 5:8 warns. Forget the horrible Hollywood images of the devil, stalking his victims with bloody fangs and clawed appendages. Satan’s schemes are more varied than most ever imagine. His ability to find ways to corrupt almost any situation is indeed legion. How can you fight back? Break every generational curse in your life. (CLICK HERE to order my book CURSE BREAKING.) Purge every sin by confession and repentance. “Do not give the devil a foothold,” Ephesians 4:27 says (NIV). Seek deliverance prayers. Schedule a Personal Encounter with me. DO SOMETHING proactive to uncover whatever demonic ingenuity might be operating undetected in your life!

An encouraging word: RESIST THE DEVIL
My blog about the craftiness of the devil and demons should not make you fearful. The Word is filled with promises of protection from every evil device of Darkness. Resist the devil and he will flee. (James 4:7); No weapon forged against you will prevail. (Is. 54:17); Nothing will harm you. (Luke 10:19). There are many, many more assurances of God’s grace prevailing when the Enemy strikes, if we are walking before the Lord without willful sin. Satan can and should be resisted with ease. Lay every fear aside. God delivers and protects those who fully trust in Him. Pray, proclaim your authority in Christ, resist and Satan will turn away!

Death by Music

Friday, November 15th 2013

Stylized portrait featuring some of the music artists who died at age 27.

A new, controversial book, explores the  oddity of famous rock stars all dying at the age of 27, some by their own hands (Curt Cobain) and the latest, Amy Winehouse, found dead in 2011 surrounded by vodka bottles. The mystery, if there is one, regarding why they all died at the same age has inspired theories of conspiracy and mysticism. Is it a matter of coincidence or numerology? Does the fact that drug and alcohol abuse was involved signify self-destructive impulses of too much fame too young to handle? What is the dark secret behind such tragedies?

Some things are known. Curt Cobain of Nirvana had two uncles and a great uncle who committed suicide. In spiritual warfare terms that clearly points to a generational curse of death and possible demonic possession. Amy Winehouse was a cutter and, in my experience, such self-inflicted mutilation almost always involves demons. (I understand the psychological aspects of such self-injury, but the satanic aspects can’t be ignored just because there are behavioral factors.) Jim Morrison was into the occult and satanic blood-sharing sex rituals. I suspect that if the truth were known, each or most had some kind of curse in their background. Whether that malediction was triggered to the age of 27 isn’t important. My spiritual hunch is that each had a demonic, genetic propensity toward self-destruction and the fact that they were celebrities merely makes the matter more interesting. What’s important is that Satan targets the young, the talented, the vulnerable; anyone with promise to make a difference in the world. What if any of these artists had become Christians? What if, out of their despair, they had turned to God and shared that witness with their fans? Satan had to get them before that possibility. Imagine Jimi Hendrix accompanying a gospel choir? Amy Winehouse singing “Amazing Grace?” It’s not so far-fetched, but it didn’t happen. If you’re a fan of Miley or Gaga or Jay-Z, pray for them that they will find Jesus and put their time and talents to work for God.

An encouraging word: REMEMBER GOD
As today’s blog speaks of youth dying too young, mark the words of Eccl. 12:1 — Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, “I find no pleasure in them.”  When you have your whole life before you, make wise decisions early lest you live with regrets later. The most important decision is to honor God and follow the teachings of Christ. Better sooner than later when a squandered life has taken its toll and living has lost its pleasure.

The Demonic Factor

  Thursday, November 14th 2013

X marks the spot. It’s an important concept in spiritual warfare.

Twenty-fourth letter of the Latin alphabet, X in Roman numerals, it’s known in math as an independent variable or unknown value.  It’s sometimes used, for example, as Individual X, Situation X, Factor X, or Generation X. It can replace a signature, indicate a kiss, or “mark the spot,” as we say. In spiritual warfare I use this designation to indicate what the devil has done that we don’t know. When I minister to someone, I’m constantly looking for the spiritual X-Factor. Sometimes it’s hidden in the alter-ego state of a dissociative personality. It may be sequestered in the evil deeds of an ancestor. It may have been forgotten by the person receiving ministry.

For example, I recently ministered to a woman whose life was spiraling downward rapidly into depression and suicide. Her once orderly existence and successful circumstances were in disarray. She couldn’t focus and was becoming more morose day by day. Psychologists and psychiatrists had treated her. Doctors had done CT scans and various neurological tests. They found nothing. The only answer seemed to be medication. But she came to me for an Encounter session to see what I could discover. One of the spiritual gifts God has given me is the ability to discern when there is an X-Factor beyond obvious circumstances. I don’t always know exactly what it is, but with the help of the Holy Spirit I have developed processes to find out. Sometimes an alter personality tells me as I minister inner healing. Often a demon manifests and reveals what happened in prior generations. I may be able to coax out a hidden memory of trauma that’s been buried.

Before you give up or commit someone you love to a lifetime of ever-stronger medications, let me (or one of our DWJD ministry teams) take you through our approach to healing and deliverance. What we discover may surprise and even shock you. It could be the answer you’ve always sought for why things are the way they are.  There may a spiritual X-Factor lurking in your life that our ministry of Focused Intervention can uncover so that you can be set free.

An encouraging word: INNER HEALING
There are many ways to approach inner healing. Each ministry engaged in this spiritual realm does it a little differently. But there are two factors that shouldn’t be excluded: 1) identifying dissociative, multiple personalities, and 2) confronting demons. Along with emotional healing work, they are like three sides of a triangle, and all three are sometimes needed to bring complete deliverance. If you feel tormented or bound, reach out to our ministry. We’ll minister inner healing to you and, when necessary, deal with the demons that have caused your torment. Don’t despair. Inner healing can be the answer you need for recovering the life you’ve lost.

Intergalactic Gaga?

  Wednesday, November 13th 2013

The many faces of Lady Gaga designed for shock, art, and attention.

Preparing to launch ashes into space.

She’s appeared in a dress made of raw meat and more recently entirely in the buff at a concert in France. Her passions are gay rights and poking fun at religion. She’s sung of having sex with Judas.  She calls her fans monsters and is determined to displace both Madonna and Katy Perry as the top pop female icon. Lady Gaga (Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta) has been a little spacey to say the least. Now she literally wants to go into space. She claims that in 2015 she’ll be aboard a Virgin Galactic spaceship (for real, no kidding) and will sing from the outer edges of the stratosphere. The gravity-less concert will be live-streamed to earth as the ultimate publicity gimmick.

She won’t be alone out there. Celestis, a Houston-based aerospace company, is now launching cremated remains into space. Apparently dumping the burned ashes of Aunt Ethel in ocean water or on a mountain peak isn’t exotic enough for some. Celestis has actually shuttled more than 1,000 bodily remains into space for $995. They put a few grams of ashes in a capsule the size of a watch battery and shoot it into space with a rocket. The container is then parachuted down and returned to the family to be kept as a memorial. For $5,000 they will put the ashes in orbit. Deep space orbit to fly around the sun costs $12,000.  Their web site declares, “From the stars we are born, to the stars we will return. Celestis makes it possible to honor the dream and memory of your departed loved one by launching a symbolic portion of cremated remains into Earth orbit, onto the lunar surface or into deep space. Join us at our launch events, and help bring the dream of spaceflight to reality by including a portion of your loved one’s ashes aboard our next satellite.” Perhaps Celestis and Gaga could join forces? They might call it a “grateful dead” concert.

An encouraging word: DISPELLING DOUBT
A new atheist effort with a web site called findingdoubt.com boasts, “Have you found doubt as your personal Lord and Savior?” Members pledge to infiltrate churches and fake being saved, even speaking in tongues.  Their aim is to “bow the knee to the rule of rationality.” It’s sick, and it’s sad, but it’s also to be expected. Doubt isn’t evil. Thomas had it, but one touch of the nail-scarred hand of Christ dispelled his unbelief (John 20:27). While others mock Jesus, reach out and touch Him, and in His presence all your doubts will be dispelled.

Modern Mummies

  Tuesday, November 12th 2013

Mummiform.

Pet mummies also offered by Summum.

I just found out about these folks, and they’re creepy to say the least: Summum. (The word is Latin for “the sum total of all creation.”) The Salt Lake City-based cult practices the ancient Egyptian religious observance of mummification. Last May, they took a case all the way to the Supreme Court, trying to force Pleasant Grove City, Utah to let them put a granite marker in a local park, right next to a monument of the Ten Commandments. The group, formed in 1975, believes in what they call the Seven Aphorisms, supposedly given to Moses on Mount Sinai. They believe Moses destroyed the Aphorisms tablet because he realized the people weren’t ready for it.  Their slogan is, “Eternal Memorialization through Mummification.” They wanted their Aphorism next to the Commandments.

Members of Summum not only plan to mummify their own bodies when they die but also offer their services through funeral homes.  They promise to preserve the body in cloth embroidered with “your personal philosophy or religion.” The mummiform  “life mask” as they call it (think King Tut here) may be inlaid with gold or jewels if that is the posthumous wish.  Each effigy is placed in a casket that can cost over a hundred thousand dollars. The 90-day mummification process itself runs $67,000. Followers of Summum insist that the process is “compatible with any philosophy or religion.” Applicants must fill out a Spiritual Will to accommodate the “transference” of their soul to its “next destination of existence.” This Will is said to be the road map to wherever you are going when you die. The Will declares, “What is your destination?  This depends on you. What are your feelings? What attracts you? You may aspire to heaven or nirvana. You may feel a reincarnation towards a certain type of life is in your destiny. You may feel compelled to unite with a clear, bright light of wisdom and understanding. We recommend you designate items to have close to your body such as incense, flowers, icons, statue of a deity, pictures, music, candles, bells, food and/or drink.”

All this is like something out of the Nile Kingdoms of Egypt, and it is. It’s the very sort of thing that God delivered his people from through the Exodus. How odd that in an enlightened scientific age such superstition would again attract people. But our biblically illiterate culture knows no better. There is so much to refute here, but the biggest lie is that you can choose your own destination after death: Hebrews 9:27 — Man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment. A better way would be to get saved and save the $67,000.

An encouraging word: PRAISE GOD NOW
A much misunderstood scripture is Psalm 6:5. Speaking of the Lord the Psalmist says,  “No one remembers you when he is dead. Who praises you from the grave?”  The Living Bible puts it better:  “For if I die, I cannot give you glory by praising you before my friends.”  When you’re dead, as a Christian, your opportunities to glorify the Lord to the lost are gone. Take advantage of every opportunity now to lift your voice in praise while you still can.  In a world of discouragement, others need to know that God is alive and worthy to be praised, while you are still alive to do it.

Cremation Tattoos

  Monday, November 11th 2013

A tattoo in process

Old Blue Eyes, Frank Sinatra.

“I’ve got you under my skin,” sang Frank Sinatra, stylizing the 30’s song by Cole Porter. The Nelson Riddle signature arrangement scored a lyrical metaphor expressing how one individual affects another. When someone irritates or strongly influences us we may say that the person is “under our skin,” past our exterior defenses. Today, the cremation and tattoo industries have combined to literally place an individual – a dead person – under the skin of a surviving friend or family member. The burned body ashes are mixed with tattoo pigment and inserted into the skin. Whether the remains are sterile doesn’t seem to bother those who want to carry someone with them, as closely as possible, even pets. Some animal lovers have their cats and dogs cremated and tattooed in memorial. Cremation remains have been inserted into jewels and even vinyl records. But putting grandma in a rose on your shoulder breaks new ground. The trend aptly dubbed “morbid ink” is apparently growing more popular and health officials have yet to interfere.

Should we as Christians shrug our shoulders at one more crazy trend, or is something more serious going on? In a blog September 24, 2013 (CLICK HERE to read) I reference my book CURSE BREAKING which details the unbiblical aspects of cremation (CLICK HERE to order). I make the point that Bible verses such as Lev. 21:11, Num. 5:2-3, 6:6-7, 19:11, and 19:13 warn against the consequences of “touching” a dead body. In my earlier blog I explain that in Old Testament times, someone had to remove a dead body to a separate place and bury it. A Nazirite vow of dedication to the Lord meant that such a person could not even be associated with the corpse of a family member. Cremated ashes are a corpse, albeit in burnt form. We do not live under the Old Covenant, and hygienic considerations are no longer necessary. Still, violating the spiritual intent of Moses’s Law can bring a curse. If the unwarranted touching of a dead body was considered a curse, what are we to think of allowing the departed into our epidermis?

An encouraging word: GOD’S MARVELOUS WORKS
I will tell of all Your marvelous work (Psalm 9:1 NKJV). I like the wording of the KJV which says “show” instead of “tell.” The great need of our hour is to actually see the miracles of God. Every week, almost every day, I am privileged to witness the supernatural in demonic manifestations and the glory of the Lord overcoming immense evil.  The Christian world is full of sermons and salvation solicitations. Nothing wrong with that. But what needs to be seen is not another slickly packaged presentation but the demonstration of God’s work. By all means let’s preach the Word, but isn’t it time to see that it really works?

Sharia in the USA

  Friday, November 8th 2013

Former Bishop of Rochester warns
of Sharia-style bonds in U.K.

David Cameron, British Prime Minister.

In England, the scene on the left is rapidly replacing the picture on the right!

To all those liberal/progressive types, listen up. You mocked the tea party and conservatives as paranoid, alarmist, and delusional for worrying that Islamic, Sharia Law might come to America. Well, it’s already in England and about to be enshrined in the U.K. financial world. Prime Minister David Cameron has announced plans to issue a Sharia bond in the UK, making it the first non-Muslim country to do so. Cameron also says that the London Stock Exchange will now have an Islamic index.  Cameron commented, “I don’t just want London to be a great capital of Islamic finance in the Western world, I want London to stand alongside Dubai as one of the great capitals of Islamic finance anywhere in the world.” The Prime Minister of England is effectively suggesting that his government, which I remind my readers is officially subservient to the Church of England, will subject at least a portion of its legal system to Islamic law. Who doubts that this somewhat small issuing of bonds worth 200 million British Pounds will grow from the infusion of wealth from Muslim Gulf states (undoubtedly his motive) to the point of eventually holding England somewhat hostage to Islamic political intentions? At least one former Anglican Bishop has raised his voice in opposition saying that Christianity is increasingly excluded from the administration of British law. Bishop Dr Nazir-Ali, who holds dual British and Pakistani citizenship, said of Cameron’s plans in London’s The Telegraph: “This means that the Government itself will be subject to Sharia in its dealings on these bonds. At the moment the issue is pretty modest, but how much will it grow? There’s a lot of liquidity out there and it could grow pretty rapidly, and then you may face a situation where a major part of your financial system is governed by sharia-compliant considerations.” He added: “Before we take these steps that could have unforeseen consequences we do need greater public discussion, greater explanation of what actually is being done and what it is we are letting ourselves in for.”

Let’s understand something. Sharia Law is about more than no-interest loans. It’s a religious code for politics and economics, with intrusion into diet and even sexual intercourse. Christians and Jews have no legal standing as they are considered “infidels” without rights. It is considered nothing less than the divine law of the Koran. Under Sharia a woman can be beaten for unveiling her face, immorality may lead to beheading, and becoming a Christian is a capital crime fully punishable by death. Sharia is arriving in England and Jihadists have their aim on America. Now, I ask, who is the alarmist?

An encouraging word: TWO JUDGMENTS
Scripture speaks of two judgments at the end of time, The Great White Throne Judgment (Revelation 20) and the Judgment Seat of Christ (2 Cor. 5). Those who rejected Christ will be at the former for a final rendering of their evil in relationship to the righteousness of Christ and “according to their works.”  The latter of which Paul speaks will be a time of handing out rewards for faithfulness to the Lord. Sinners won’t be there. There will no mention of sin, for those transgressions have been blotted out by the blood of Jesus.  Which of the two judgments do you want to face at death?
