Stephen King has a horror story to tell. No, not that Stephen King of It, Doctor Sleep, Bag of Bones, Cujo, Firestarter, Misery, The Tommyknockers etc. I’m referring to Stephen D. King who is chief economist of HSBC Bank. The latter has just written a book that is as scary as anything the Maine-based horror writer ever thought of. King D.’s book is entitled, When the Money Runs Out: The End of Western Affluence.  His premise is simple and sobering: The Western world, especially America, has experienced extraordinary economic progress throughout the last six decades, a prosperous period so continuous that ever-expanding economic growth has come to seem normal – and expected.  But such an era of continuously rising living standards is a historical anomaly Stephen D. warns, and the current stagnation of Western economies threatens to reach crisis proportions in the not-so-distant future. He isn’t recommending buying gold bullion and heading for the hills with dehydrated food, but King does warn that government benefits as we know them, and Obama wants to give in greater measure, won’t be affordable in the future. By allowing budget deficits to soar and interest rates to go to zero, American citizens have become, in King’s words, “stimulus junkies.”

All this should be sobering to Christians, who more than any other people, see the trajectory of civilization headed toward an end point of centralized control and the loss of all significant human liberties. The forecast looks like this: governments promise ever more benefits of health care, pensions, and social safety nets until the resources to underwrite such largess is gone. That is followed by major social upheaval and the promise of someone, anyone, to fix it – at the price of creeping totalitarianism. We’re not the first country to encounter such a scenario, but we are the nation with the best-financed Christian population. Strangle that, and the ability to evangelize is severely hindered. Missions will suffer, Christian charities will be stymied, and all outreaches will have to pull back drastically. Finally the whole thing will be near collapse, the perfect time for a “savior” to arrive on the scene. It seems to me that the conclusion to be drawn from this projection is that “when the money runs out” the trumpet is about to sound! (1 Thess. 4:16)


An encouraging word: GOD HASN’T FORGOTTEN YOU

 

How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? David’s lament of Psalm 13:1 goes on in verse two: How long will my enemy triumph over me?  How human. How much like you and me. We’ve all had times we felt abandoned by God, and wondered why, at the same time, our adversaries were allowed to step up their attacks on us. To each who has felt abandoned or forsaken, welcome to the human family. It’s part of living and growing in life. It’s as old as King David. And the answer to this painful query is still the same: I will never leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5).

A report in yesterday’s USA-TODAY newspaper reveals a shocking statistical conclusion. Since 2006, one-third of victims in mass killings were younger than 18. The average age of meeting a violent death was eight! More shocking, one-third of those murdered were killed by a blood parent. Others were killed by stepparents, their parents’ ex-lovers, or other family members. Only 25% were killed by a person they didn’t know. Sadly, you can add to that toll all those who were maimed and violently injured by a family member. The individual stories are gut-wrenching, such as a four-year-old covered in blood who told police, responding to a call, “Everybody’s dead.” The child had covered her own bullet wounds with Band-Aids. In short, child homicide is getting out of control. In many of these cases, the killings were preceded by unthinkable abuse.

There’s plenty of blame to go around, most of the fingers pointed at guns. But take away all the firearms and you’ve still got plenty of stab wounds, broken bones, and tortured beatings. What are the real facts about our culture killing our kids?

  1. Most of these killings took place in broken homes, common-law or live-in arrangements, or other dysfunctional child-rearing circumstances. It’s not a stretch to say that the destruction of the two-parent nuclear family is a huge contributing factor.
  2. We legalize killing late-term babies ex-utero, so it’s just a matter of physical development separating those extracted from the womb at 8 months v. a six-month-old baby. If killing the late-term baby is government sanctioned, some might conclude that killing a kid a few months later doesn’t involve a higher premium on life?
  3. Our movies and video games reward body counts to the extent that victims dispatched with abandon are discarded without emotion.
  4. Extreme humanistic enthusiasts and godless behaviorist insist that life is no more sacred for the human than the animal, or plants for that matter. If humans are not unique creatures of God, their life has less value.
  5. Research shows that abuse often turns fatal. In fact, the majority of kids killed were first beaten and bruised. If a child can be sexually and physically mistreated it may be a small step for an out-of-control, mentally ill caretaker to end the child’s life.

Stopping the killing of our kids has many solutions, but we can start by remembering the words of Psalm 127:3 – Children are a heritage from the Lord. When we recognize that there is a God, that God is the creator of life, and that all life is a sacred trust from the Almighty, it means that every human created in His image is worthy of dignity and respect. Submitting our culture and our country to God is a first step to stop killing our kids.


An encouraging word: WICKEDNESS IN SOCIETY

 

I read many Bible versions, but there are times when the old King James Version says it best, like in Psalm 12:8 – “The wicked walk on every side, when the vilest men are exalted.” In short, wickedness easily prevails when evil men are held up as icons. What a picture of the times we live in. Our entertainment heroes treat women as sex objects. Our politicians lie and use spin-speak to cover it up. Even preachers hide their hypocrisy until caught. In contrast, Proverbs 4:18 declares, The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn,shining ever brighter till the full light of day.

Lawyer sues to get equal rights for monkeys.
A bleeding-heart liberal attorney in New York State has filed a lawsuit on behalf of a chimpanzee. Steven Wise, an attorney and president of the Non-Human Rights Project, claims that a 26-year-old chimp is being imprisoned against his will. The lawsuit accuses the chimpanzee’s keepers, Patrick and Diane Lavery, of violating New York law. The suit alleges that the laws of New York do not “limit legal person-hood to Homo sapiens.”  The attorney’s argument is that state law does not allow any “person” to be unlawfully detained. This is how far the belief in evolution has taken us. A university trained lawyer, admitted to the bar, arguing that monkeys are entitled to equal protection under the law.

What is this chimpanzee’s life like?  He currently spends his fall days in a room heated to 70 degrees with walls decorated to look like a jungle. The chimp even has color, cable TV. Hundreds of millions of people in third world countries don’t have it that good. Never mind, the lawsuit is going forward until this attorney is convinced the chimp can go free, though where the chimp goes after that no one knows. Perhaps Mr. Wise would like the chimp to move in with him and sleep in his bed. Just one day of experiencing the chimp’s lack of toilet trained habits might make Mr. Wise think otherwise about his evolutionary equal. This chimpanzee might be a chimp but this lawyer is a chump.


An encouraging word: COMPARISONS

We are all prone to compare ourselves to others. The car they drive, the house they live in, what they look like are all factors we may consider when making comparisons. First Samuel 16:7 says, “The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”  Remember that the next time you compare yourself to another person. As someone who counsels those with deep, dark secrets I can assure you that things are not always what they appear on the outside.

Inevability

The first “smart” phone.
Some things we accept as having certitude may not have been all that certain in the beginning. Things we think are inevitable might not be. Case in point: take out your cell phone . Pull up the phone dialer and see at how the numbers are arranged.  Now, who decided it would be done that way?  You probably never thought about. I hadn’t, until I read an article about the 17 possible designs that Bell Telephone considered. (Remember Ma Bell, before there was a Verizon or T-Mobile?) Possible choices of dialers included:

My point? What we think is so unavoidable may not be all that certain. Suppose that the one labeled II-A above had been selected. We’d all be dialing our phones in a very different mode. The one IV-A wasn’t inevitable, it was just what a handful of people at Bell Labs decided on in the 1950s, a choice that now affects billions of the world’s citizens. In the end, the design that was considered most efficient won out.

There’s a spiritual lesson to be learned here. The faith that so many follow is something they inherited. If mom was a Baptist, it’s “inevitable” that little Johnny will be one. Or a Presbyterian, Methodist, and so on.  Maybe an atheist, if dad didn’t believe. Perhaps a Buddhist if grandpa was one.  But the pathway of serving God should be based on an informed choice and on a careful reading of the Bible and church history. Christianity should be a thoughtful resolution, not an inevitable pattern. When one wears the label “Christian” by default not decision, it may not be a real commitment of faith. I pose this dilemma to every reader of this blog. Is your spiritual path based on assumptions, like dialing numbers on a  phone, without every asking, “Who put the numbers like that?” Just like those engineers at Bell Lab made conscious choices that have affected the future, each of you must make a conscious choice that will affect your spiritual future – for all eternity. Heaven or Hell should not be decided by default. Remember the words of Jesus in Matthew 12:30, “He who is not with me is against me.” When it comes to eternity, don’t dial your decision on the wrong keypad.


An encouraging word: REJOICE WHEN GOD TESTS YOU

 

Psalm 11:5 says, “The Lord tests the righteous” (NKJV). What’s the point of that? Why not leave them alone.  Why not test the ungodly? Why “try” (KJV) those who are doing their best to serve the Lord? Because God wants us to be better, therefore He tests our faith. For our own good, He lovingly pushes us onward and higher. Perhaps He has more wonderful things in store for us and doesn’t want us slacking off short of the greatness of our goal. So when the Lord tests you, rejoice. He’s putting his confidence in you that you’re capable of doing even more for him. The test is His way of showing that.

Killer Gives Clues

It has been just barely a year since December 14, 2012, when 20-year-old Adam Lanza killed 20 first-graders and six adults at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. A year later, we know much more than was originally released to the media. A new official summary published last week says Lanza had serious mental health issues, but that he clearly knew what he was doing. He had a spreadsheet of his plans, smashed his computer hard drive to destroy evidence, and used earplugs while he fired. He also murdered his mother beforehand. Investigators revealed that as a fifth grader in the same school which became his killing field, Lanza kept a notebook called “The Big Book of Granny.” It told the tale of a woman with a gun in her cane who shoots people, especially children.  Other facts we now know about Lanza include: he was obsessed with mass murders; he played violent video games; he kept a spreadsheet ranking mass murders. The report offers no answers for the question, “Why?”

Well, look at the facts and the photo. His compulsion to kill was fed by the games he played and the obsessions that occupied his time. If anyone had been playing close attention they could have seen that something serious was coming. Toward the end, he stayed in his room and his mother had to communicate with him by email – in the house they occupied together. And then there’s that photo. It’s certainly not the only picture of Lanza, but this one is truly scary. It’s a view into a mentally tormented soul, one obviously enamored with evil. The clues were there, as is often the case with mass murderers. The problem is those who should have been watching, his mother and absent father, were somehow incapable of intervening. If I had seen those eyes before he killed, I could have seen it coming. So could any deliverance minister accustomed to gazing at the evil inside souls. Sadly, so long as our culture of fantasized violence and spiritual blindness continues, Sandy Hook School may not be the last case where we could have seen the clues.

Psalm 12:5 declares, ‘Because of the oppression of the weak and the groaning of the needy, I will now arise,’ says the LORD. Our ministry has lived by those words. We have always endeavored to be a ministry to the forgotten, the leftovers, and the ones no one else wants. Early on in the days of our nationwide radio ministry we adopted the theme, HOPE FOR THE HOPELESS. We are still committed to that mission. Thanksgiving Retrospective

Okay, so I’m a day late. But looking back over my shoulder at Thanksgiving I have a simple observation: Why must we rob yet another Christian holiday of its true significance? By now, most informed Americans know that when President Obama recently video-taped special comments in memory of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address that he opted out the recognition that our nation is “under God.” His underlings blamed it on a text that he was given which omitted this significant recognition. Even if his schedule was busy and he didn’t notice the omission, he could have apologized and reaffirmed his belief that we are a nation under God. But no, that would upset too many Progressives.

Now it’s Thanksgiving that has taken a hit. When the original proclamation by President Lincoln was given in 1863, it stated that American’s blessings “should be solemnly, reverently acknowledged.”  Lincoln declared, “I do therefore invite my fellow-citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens. So much for our obsession with today’s Black Friday. Sadly, we’ve exchanged recognition of Divine guidance with politically correct contrivances. (If I hear one more person say “Happy Holidays” I think I’ll puke!) So what were we supposed to be thankful for yesterday? God and his grace which has been shed on our Land. Anything less is a disgrace!

Yesterday was supposed to be the day of gratefulness, Thanksgiving.  Many likely did express gratitude for family, friends, provisions, and their favorite football team winning. I wonder how many were thankful for what really matters – God’s love, His steadfast faithfulness, and the gift of eternal life. As we walk through this season of festivity, let’s remember that being thankful is more than a one-day deal.  Appreciation for what the Lord has done in our lives is an all-year-long occasion.

Where is Buddha?

The battle over Buddha is heating up.  Recent excavations near Lumbini, Nepal may have unearthed the final resting place of the “Enlightened One.” If so, this discovery pushes back the date of his birth about 100 years to the sixth century B. C.  Such timing is crucial to countries like Thailand that use a dating system keyed to the year of Buddha’s death. The problem is that no one is certain when he actually lived or when he really died. For hundreds of years Buddha scholars have debated his historical birth and death. Historians speculate that he died between 420-380 B.C. But current query is now focused on bits of charcoal from a wooden shrine built during an earlier projected date of birth.

This confusion is unlike the birth and death of Christ which even secular scholars admit is no more than a few years off at most. While the historical life of Buddha is shrouded with confusion, not so with Christ. There is no debate about the existence of the historical Jesus or contradictions about the approximation of when he was born and died. More important, is the contrast of teachings. The basic tenants of Buddhism centers on Gautama’s interpretation of human suffering. The essence of Buddhism is found in three premises: 1) Existence is suffering; 2) Desires causes suffering; 3) Ridding desire ends suffering.  Desire can then be eradicated by following Buddha’s Eightfold Path and Four Noble Truths. The fallacy of such philosophical speculation is that it ignores the problem of sin and Satan. Omitting man’s fall and the devil’s doings from any analysis of human affairs leaves faulty presuppositions. More critical is the fact that no one is looking for the grave of Jesus as with Buddhists who have constantly sought the final resting place of Buddha. Jesus has no grave. There is no body. He has risen and that is the essential difference between Christianity and Buddhism. The introspective egocentricity of Buddhism can be contrasted to the commission of Christ to feed the hungry, clothe the poor, and heal the brokenhearted. In short, Buddha was a seeker and Jesus is a Savior. Enough said.

Sometimes I feel like David in Psalms 12:1 – Help, LORD, for the godly are no more; the faithful have vanished from among men. Ever felt like you were alone in your zeal for the Lord? Most Christian have. I have. Like Elijah we may feel we are the only ones faithful. But God reminded the prophet that seven thousand had not yet bowed to the idol Baal (1 Kings 19:18). Be encouraged, the Lord has others who have remained faithful and someday we shall rejoice together around His throne.

The Walking Dead

The pictures above were taken by me personally last week on the streets of New York, just off Times Square. During a break of exorcism Encounter sessions in the Big Apple, I stepped out of the hotel for a bite to eat. Suddenly, trudging down the street was a long line of zombie-like characters. The acting was so real that one might have wondered if the “city that never sleeps” was enduring some kind of apocalyptic moment. Stumbling, gazing into the distance with vacant eyes, the group of about twenty actors looked like walking demons as much as walking corpses. Then, a big bus pulled up and a director of some sort herded the group aboard, their promotional display of stylized terror at an end.

No one explained what this was all about but I assumed it concerned the hit TV series, Walking Dead, the story of a group of survivors facing the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse. In the show, the survivors try to hide from the hordes of “walkers” or “biters,” as they are referred to in the show. They eat anything they can, and even a bite can be deadly infectious. The group of survivors struggles to stay alive in the midst of all the insanity. In addition to the walking dead, there are also predatory human survivors. Needless to say the whole feel of the show is dark and hopeless. A viewer can’t help but wonder if the motif is a mockery of Christ’s resurrection from the dead and the graves being opened when Jesus was crucified. (Matt 27:52-53 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many. KJV)

Unlike this dramatic display of God’s power, the Walking Dead life is cynical showbiz. Just as the current rage for vampires feeds off a post-Christian world view of eternal life, animated corpses offer a nihilistic view of the triumph of death over life. It’s not a TV series Christians should be enamored with as the walking dead stumble aimlessly from their graves. What’s sick about our society is that anyone would be enamored with such gruesomeness, not exactly in accordance with the words of Paul to the Philippians (Phil. 4:8): Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things.


An encouraging word: LOVE RIGHTEOUSNESS

 

It might be said that people love a lot of things today, their smart phones, their cars, their computing devices, their X-Boxes, whatever. But it could seldom be said that they love righteousness. But that’s exactly what the Word says God loves, in Psalm 11:7: For the LORD is righteous, He loves righteousness. (NKJV) Christians should want what God wants and love what He loves. False cults are filled with the love of self, sex, wealth, power, whatever fills the narcissistic void of a sinful heart.  But true religion is the love of what the heart of God pursues, and this Psalm clearly instructs us to love that which is righteous.

Demons in the Bible

Demons are in the Bible. Everywhere. Especially in the New Testament: the Gospels; the Book of Acts: the epistles of Paul Peter, James, John; the Revelation. The subject is inescapable. Still Christian critics of deliverance argue such miracles have ceased. Other critics don’t even believe the record of Scripture. Let’s deal with that last criticism. Think back on your own life. How accurate is your memory going back 20-30 years? Probably pretty good. In your 30s you can recall a lot in detail about your childhood. In your 40s and 50s you still have vivid recollections about your adolescent and teenage years. Even into your sixties you can likely remember situations with accuracy (even years and dates and particulars) when you were in your 20s and 30s. My point? This is exactly what the new testament writers were doing, especially Matthew, Mark, and Luke who chronicle the life and deeds of Christ with regards to casting out demons.

Consider this time line. We know that Peter and Paul were martyred in 65 A.D.  The Acts of the Apostles, authored by Luke, was written after his Gospel. (See Acts 1:1 where Luke refers to his Gospel.) Now, if indeed Luke’s Gospel was based in part on the accounts of Mark and Matthew, the three synoptic Gospels, and Acts, had to be written BEFORE 65 A.D. Otherwise, the deaths of Peter and Paul would have been mentioned, at least in Luke and Acts. One more thing. Jesus was crucified in 33 A.D.  Therefore Acts, all Paul’s epistles, and all the Gospels except John were written within a time period of no more than 32 years after the events in the life of Christ. Get my point? How Jesus faced demons and how he exorcised them was a relatively recent memory to these Gospel writers. We all can think back about the content of casual conversations many years ago. How much more our accurate our recollection would be if we were recalling the words, deeds, and miracles of God Incarnate. The synoptic Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke contain at least two dozen examples of Christ’s power over Satan’s kingdom. We can trust these accounts to be accurate, reliable, trustworthy, and a genuine display of His authority directed toward demons. Believe the Bible and get on with the job of DOING WHAT JESUS DID!


An encouraging word: STUDY GOD’S WORD
One of many things discovered doing deliverance is that the devil’s kingdom is multi-faceted and unbelievably complex. Most Christians have a simplistic view of Satan. He’s far more sophisticated and ingenious than imagined. This means that Christians need to seriously understand their faith and their authority in Christ to overcome demonic evil. Second Timothy 1:15 instructs us to “study” to prove that we are capable of “rightly dividing the word of truth.” It’s okay to read the Bible for inspiration and comfort, but we also need to seriously study Scripture to fight the fight of faith. The Helmet of Salvation

I live in a state that doesn’t have a helmet law. Every time I drive down the freeway and see some biker pass me going 90 M.P.H., not wearing a helmet, I cringe.  I also may mutter something under my breath about how dumb he is. I’m right. In Michigan, for example, after they repealed a helmet law, biker deaths rose 18%. And get this. Bikers who have an accident resulting in head trauma, a common occurrence in such tragedies, require on average $1.3 million in medical care to recover. And 63% of that, according to the Centers for Disease Control, is paid for by you and me the taxpayers. Sure you look cool with the wind in your hair. But while you’re celebrating your Easy Rider freedoms, the rest of us are picking up the bill for your indiscretion. Plus, your families will suffer the emotional trauma you inflicted on you own head.

But this blog isn’t a polemic against bikers “born to be wild.” There is a far more serious head trauma to be endured if you omit one other kind of helmet — the helmet of salvation, one of the five defensive aspects of spiritual armor recorded in Ephesians chapter six. It accompanies the “belt of truth” the “breastplate of righteousness,” the “gospel of peace” on your feet, and the “shield of faith.” Each, along with the offensive weapon of the “sword of the Spirit,” is vital, but the helmet of salvation is indispensable.  Without being saved, there is nothing to defend. It is your relationship with Christ that is foremost.  Just as it is unwise for a Harley dude to “head out on the highway” (trivia-which rock band said that?) without protective covering, so it is for you to travel the highway of life without the helmet of salvation. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast,” Ephesians 2:8-9 declares. Trust in Jesus. Get on your spiritual headgear and get ready to live, and die.


An encouraging word: FORGIVENESS FOR SIN
In response to crime, some states have passed somewhat draconian “three strike” or “four strike” laws to get repeat criminals off the streets. It’s working, but our prisons are being filled with some whose lifetime sentence hardly fits the crime. In Louisiana a convict named Timothy Jackson is serving a life sentence for stealing a jacket. Problem was, it was his fourth burglary and now “he’s out,” incarcerated for good, hardly an act of justice. Thank God, spiritually speaking, there are no lifetime sentences without parole. Christ is always ready to forgive our transgressions.  With Jesus there is no permanent detention if we repent.  “The gift of God is eternal life,” we are promised in Romans 6:23, no matter what we’ve done.
