Darwin’s Demons

Friday, August 15, 2014

Does this look like a happy man? Obviously not. It’s Charles Darwin, whose theory of evolution in The Origin of Species established the idea that all species came from common ancestors, and that humans were not a unique and differentiated creation of God. Though baptized Anglican, he was essentially raised a godless Unitarian and eventually married his own cousin. It has been known that he suffered miserably while writing Origin but a new book My Age of Anxiety, by Scott Stossel. (The strange, off-balance cover of the book is above.) Stossel, the editor of “Atlantic” magazine, tells us just how bad Darwin suffered, described in his own words: *

*NOTE: Be advised the following is unpleasant reading.

For 25 years extreme spasmodic daily & nightly flatulence: occasional vomiting, on two occasions prolonged during months. Vomiting preceded by shivering, hysterical crying[,] dying sensations or half-faint. & copious very palid urine. Now vomiting & every passage of flatulence preceded by ringing of ears, treading on air & vision …. Nervousness when E[mma Darwin, his wife] leaves me.

What a miserable man. It would be easy to dismiss his suffering as due to a lack of proper medical attention in the 19th Century. The author of Anxiety suggests that Darwin suffered from emotional illnesses and phobias, a kind of angst-ridden 1800s PTSD. Maybe. But perhaps it was more than that. Demons? (You knew that conclusion was coming!) Quite possibly. However great he was at geology and biology, and to whatever extent some of what he wrote is true, the ultimate conclusion of his theses was, and is, empirically unproven, anti-God, and destructive of faith in Scripture. It may be that the demons who demented his obviously brilliant mind took a physical toll as torment for his blasphemously subversive ideas. It’s true that sometimes “the devil takes care of his own.” I’ve learned in deliverance that it’s also true that once the demons have gotten what they want from an individual they turn the purported benefits of their partnership into a hellish toll on the one who cooperated with them. In the quote above, is Darwin describing a demonic attack? Hmmm.

An encouraging word:  LET GOD JUDGE YOU

“Let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end,” the NKJV renders Psalm 7:9. What a day that will be. Certainly that will happen at the end of time when Satan is cast into the Abyss. But even now, wickedness has a life span. Growing older one realizes that no misery lasts forever. Trials and tribulations do have an expiration date. God puts boundaries on even the most severe oppression of the Enemy. We wish it would come sooner; but be confident that whatever attacks of Satan you are suffering now, they will run out in due time. God is faithful. And if you are faithful, wickedness WILL come to an end.

Robin Williams

Thursday, August 14, 2014

In age of foul-mouthed comedians whose stock-and-trade is four-letter expletives to stun already desensitized audiences, Robin Williams could have them laughing with just his quick wit and zaniness. As a clown, an alien, or a genie, he delighted all ages. Those who knew him and have paid tribute have universally said that he was basically a decent man. Sure, they were some foibles, as I mentioned in my Monday blog “Robin Williams’ Demons” (to read CLICK HERE). But on the whole, especially by Hollywood standards, he was a good individual. So why would someone so kind and caring kill himself by hanging from a belt wedged in a closet door? We don’t know yet, and may never know, the exact answer. But you might as well ask that question of hundreds of thousands of friends and loved ones of other inexplicable suicide victims. Suicide kills; more yearly than car accidents, prostate cancer and leukemia. About 39,000 annually and growing. Why? Here are my thoughts. Suicide has become epidemic and results from a variety of causes, including:

  • Depression brought on by life circumstances.
  • Brain chemistry that is somehow out of balance.
  • Long standing and untreated or poorly-treated mental illness.
  • Demonization resulting from generational curses or personal occult involvement.

Often it’s a combination of the above. But it’s the latter cause that concerns me because of my calling. There are demons that go by the name Suicide. This is not to suggest that everyone who commits suicide has a demon; but many do. Demons calling themselves “Death” and “Destruction” stalk those who are vulnerable. If you know someone who is suicidal, by all means get them proper medical and psychological help; but also consider that inner healing and exorcism are modalities of spiritual intervention that may be just as necessary. I pray that if any good comes of this tragedy it will be an awareness of insisting that those in profound despair should be forced, by those who care, to get the right kind of help of every kind.

An encouraging word:  LET GOD JUDGE YOU

Passing the buck of responsibility is a national pastime. Politicians do it with ease. Entertainers employ expensive spin doctors to do it for them. Even pastors excuse moral failures in theologically creative language. We’ve all heard the one, “The dog ate the homework.” But the psalmist David cries in Psalm 7:8, “Judge me, O Lord.” A jury of one’s peers is a tough obstacle to fool, but no one can lie to God. In our times of moral obfuscation and lame excuses, we need more spiritual leaders who will cry out fervently, “God adjudicate my life, my words, and my actions!”

Iron Maiden’s Satanism

Wednesday, August 13, 2014

The ritual has begun, Satan’s work is done, 666 the number of the beast.

Sacrifice is going on tonight.

I’ll possess your body and I’ll make you burn . . .

I have the power to make my evil take its course.

Chilling words from a satanic cult ritual? No, the words to a 1982 heavy metal song/album entitled The Number of the Beast, by the British band Iron Maiden. (They named themselves after a bloody, medieval torture device, a coffin with nails embedded inward.) Steve Harris of the band claimed that the lyrics came to him after watching the occult-themed movie “Damien: Omen II.” (Nicko McBrain, the band’s drummer, became a Christian in 1999.) Bruce Dickinson, who screamed the demonic lyrics, causing concern among Christians (including me) thirty years ago, is now an international jet airplane pilot for British world Airlines. (Remind me not to fly them!)  He has his own airplane leasing fleet. As a crafty and successful business executive today he refurbishes old airplanes and leases them.

One certainly can be glad Dickinson has become more mentally mainstream, but for those of us who lived through and survived the satanic-themed songs of decades past (Slayer, Deicide, et al.) there are memories of kids who took bands like Iron Maiden all-too seriously. It may have been make-believe to Dickinson and the boys, but it provided a slippery slope to the demonic world for many impressionable young minds. Those kids, strung out on drugs and flashing satanic salute signs at Iron Maiden concerts, aren’t piloting planes today. Most aren’t entrepreneurs with millions in the bank. Their lives were ruined, at least in some part, because they took such lyrics as a liturgy of evil. Bruce has mellowed. Great. But he should pay back some of his fortune to drug rehab centers and Christian deliverance ministries who are still picking up the pieces of his “Beastly” musical theater.

An encouraging word:  WATCH YOUR WORDS

“You must rid yourselves of . . . filthy language from your lips” (Colossians 3:8). That rule leaves out much of the music, movies, and other forms of entertainment that are popular today. It also censors far too many current Christian conversations.. It’s become cool, hip, “progressive” and “enlightened” for some millennial, and older, believers in Christ to flaunt their supposed liberties with coarse conversation. But God’s word sternly denounces such laxness of spiritual propriety. Be careful to watch your words, the ones you speak and the ones you hear.

Robin Williams’ Demons

Tuesday, August 12, 2014

“We know that he had demons.” I didn’t say that. An E! Entertainment TV channel host said that last night, using a figurative metaphor. I was watching. I’d just heard the news that actor and comedian Robin Williams had been found dead. Suicide. He apparently asphyxiated himself. I quickly turned on the TV, and that’s the first thing I saw and heard. Sadly, it probably wasn’t far off the mark. He had been to drug rehab at least two times to battle a cocaine addiction. The photo above, publically posted years ago, seems somewhat ironic now. To me he was one of the few (along with Steve Martin) genuinely funny people capable of playing any role and making laughter out of any situation. Everyone says he was truly a nice man, and no one can doubt his acting and comic genius. I loved his movies Dead Poets Society (critics did) and Patch Adams (critics didn’t).

Are there any spiritual clues regarding this tragedy? His mother was a Christian Scientist, though it’s not clear if Williams believed in anything particular. He was officially an Episcopalian and founded his own philanthropic organization. His personal life was a little messy. During his first marriage he cheated on his wife and the mistress later claimed that he infected her with herpes. He then married his son’s nanny who was seven months pregnant with his child. He first checked into rehab in 2006 for alcohol problems.

What to make of this? It’s hard to read between the lines beyond his entertainment career. He was clearly troubled, addicted, and depressed. My experience in such cases tells me that this kind of individual is seeking to escape some deep, inner pain. It also seems reasonably clear that he suffered from Dissociative Identity Disorder. I think that’s why he was able to instantly shift character so quickly, completely, and with such improvisational ability — better than anyone has ever done it. Because of my experience, insights, and spiritual gifts from the Lord, I’m confident that if I could have spent 15 minutes with him I would have pinpointed exactly the point of his pain. A well-trained therapist should have done the same. From there on, inner healing and deliverance might have changed the outcome of this terrible loss. Yes, he likely did have demons, as the TV host said; not figuratively but quite literally.

An encouraging word:  DON’T TRUST HUMANS ALONE

“Stop trusting in mere humans, who have but a breath in their nostrils,” the Lord warned through his prophet Isaiah (2:22). And yet, that is what people do, over and over. They trust scientists to tell them how life began. The look to psychiatrists more than ministers to find answers for their problems. They consult philosophers about the deep questions of life. Knowledgeable and highly educated people may have much to offer because of their wisdom and experience. But when it comes to eternal questions, it is God alone who has all the right answers in His Word.

Black Jesus?

Friday, August 8, 2014

The problem isn’t that he’s black, but that he spouts profanity, liberally uses the N word, and demeans many things that Christians in common hold sacred. Aaron McGruder and Mike Clatenburg, co-creators of the new Adult Swim TV channel series about a present-day Christ living in Compton, CA, had better be glad their lead character isn’t Muslim. If a Black Mohammad character were insulting Islam the way Black Jesus assaults Christianity, the co-creators would be living under a fatwa, on their way to a beheading.  The show premiered last night, but early reviews indicate that this Son of God is not exactly the King of Kings. He smokes weed and speaks in expletives. To encourage self-reliance, Black Jesus suggests that locals in the hood grow marijuana as a cash crop. Mike Lazzo, head of the Adult Swim network, calls the series’ creator McGruder a “genius” for giving Jesus a potty mouth.

Perhaps this is to be expected in an anything-goes age. But when is enough, enough? No TV writer would do this to Buddha or the Prophet of Islam? But as usual, Jesus and Christians are fair game for any outrageous insult. To render Christ in a contemporary setting might be seen as theater, were it not for the obvious intent to mock Christianity and Christians. Of course, it’s blasphemous, irreverent, spiritually criminal, and disgusting. I’m sure the critics will see it as “trend-setting,” “full of meaning,” “irreverent toward tradition,” “risky,” and “genius.” Really? Is that what’s going on when Christ refers to a follower as b**** a**? It might even be seen as an innovative away to introduce young people to religion. In reality, the plot and dialogue were hatched in Hell and its story line is an invitation to eternal damnation.

An encouraging word:  END THE VIOLENCE

“O righteous God . . . bring an end to the violence of the wicked,” David pleaded in Psalm 7:9. This means more than criminal conduct, assault, and life-threatening actions. The “violence” that David wants God to end is any behavior which is violent toward the word and ways of the Lord. Abortion is violent. Sexual abuse is violent. Cursing and berating an innocent child is violent. Using the Lord’s name is vain is verbal violence. May the Lord come soon and bring an end to all kinds of violence from which we suffer as a nation and as individuals.

Israel and Gaza

Monday, August 4, 2014

In recent weeks the world has been transfixed on warfare in Ukraine and Gaza. The latter, where the Palestinian Hamas faction has launched destructive missiles toward Israel, has suffered the full force of Jewish retaliation. The result is that nearly 2,000 citizens of Gaza have died and world public opinion has tilted against Israel.  Jewish leaders argue that Hamas deliberately stationed soldiers and arms near schools and hospitals, not caring about their own people, to create collateral damage  and thus outrage public opinion. The Israelis say they have had no choice but to respond to the rocket attacks on innocent civilians. They are determined to wipe out the munitions arsenals of Hamas, as well as the tunnels used to smuggle arms and terrorists. To Israel, Hamas is, plain and simple, a dangerous organization that can’t be allowed to exist with impunity, a mere rocket lob away from raining death down on the people of the Holy Land.

In an article last week in The Atlantic magazine, Amos Oz, a liberal, peace-movement Israeli, spoke out. In the past he has opposed Jewish settlements of disputed territory and lobbied for compromise with the Palestinians. No more. He put it succinctly in terms that Americans should understand: What would you do if your neighbor across the street sits down on the balcony, puts his little boy on his lap and starts shooting machine gun fire into your nursery? What would you do if your neighbor across the street digs a tunnel from his nursery to your nursery in order to blow up your home and kidnap your family?

That’s sobering. And it clearly explains the dilemma that the devil has created through the ancient curses which have fallen on too many of the angry descendants of Ishmael.

An encouraging word:  GOD ABHORS DECEIT

“Deceitful men the Lord abhors.” That is very strong language in Psalm 5:6. To abhor is to hate. God hates deceit. To deceive is to distort, mislead or fraudulently represent anything. It is duplicity by trickery. I’m not referring to pulling a rabbit from a hat by sleight of hand. That kind of fakery is obvious and meant to entertain. But deceit in finances, morality, and spirituality incurs the wrath of God. Think about what you say and how you treat others. Beware if you are speaking or behaving deceitfully. You don’t want to be acting in a way that God abhors.

Parents in Prison

Friday, August 1, 2014

It’s something we seldom hear about. What happens to the kids if mom, or dad, is arrested and goes to jail? It’s happening more and more. The statistics are horrifying. In the U. S. 1.7 million children have at least one parents in prison. Include local jails and the number is 2.7 million. Some little ones are traumatized by witnessing the arrest of their parents. Other are immediately abandoned when a parent is marched away to a patrol car. A research study in California found that only 13% of arresting officers even thought about asking if the person they were taking to jail had children.

But it gets a lot worse, from my perspective. As a minister of deliverance, I’m always wary of ways that the devil can get legal access to a person’s life. As unfair as it may seem, this is one such way. The trauma of seeing an officer knock at the door, or worse yet break down the door, and enter with guns pointed at mom or dad can be just the open door the devil is seeking. Then, if the parent is arrested and the child is abandoned, even by a bad parent, because of the arrest, another door is opened. Granted, some of these kids might be better off with a violent or drug-dealing parent gone. What really concerns me is that the number of children with an imprisoned parent is likely to grow larger. That makes a bigger target area for Satan. As a nation, our only hope to stem this tide of children becoming at risk for demonization is to reverse the respect we’ve lost for the family; and restore the ideal of a two-parent home where love is present and crime is absent.

An encouraging word:  THE PRICE YOU PAY FOR SIN

“I am worn out from groaning; all night long I flood my bed with weeping.” That lament of David in Psalm 6:6 makes this one of the saddest Psalms. What was the source of David’s misery? His sin. He looked with lust on Bathsheba and paid for it the rest of his life. His emotional pain was deep and long-lasting. His sin took but a moment to conceive in his mind, but its consequences lasted a lifetime. The lesson to learn is that you can be sure of this: The price you will pay for disobeying God will last much longer, and be much more devastating, than you could ever imagine.

Superstar Canceled

Thursday, July 31, 2014

Original poster advertising rock
opera Jesus Christ Superstar.

It’s over, and not soon enough for me. The North American arena tour of the blasphemous rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar” has been canceled. Accusations and lawsuits are flying. The cast was planned as a strange mix of profane punker “Johnny Rotten” as King Herod and Brandon Boyd of the band Incubus (Yes, they named themselves after sex with demons.), a fitting casting job if I’ve ever heard of one. The rock musical, which debuted in 1971, will not experience a new incarnation.  Based on the last days of Christ’s life, the production has earned hundreds of millions of dollars, suggesting Jesus was sexually active with Mary Magdalene and portraying Judas as the real hero (juxtaposed to a waffling, confused Christ). The main promoter of this tour simply said, “The fact is that the show did not sell well.”

The devil must be disappointed. For forty-plus years demons have had a heyday with the mockery and sacrilege of “Superstar,” demeaning Jesus to millions. My book Larson’s Book of Spiritual Warfare (to order CLICK HERE) contains the fascinating story of my encounter with a demon who claimed credit, at least in part, for helping to inspire the rock opera. The demon, which possessed a 15-year-old girl from rural Missouri, spoke in a beautifully enunciated British accent that even a trained actress would be hard-pressed to portray. (Remember, that Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice were from England.) I’m sure that Satan has a backup plan to follow this cancellation, but for now it’s one less open door for the devil to deceive souls. Even among those who are his servants (Yes, I consider anyone associated with “Superstar” guilty by association.), Satan sometimes has a hard time keeping everyone in line. Don’t use this as an excuse to drag out your old LP or CD of the production. Get rid of it, listening to it is as deadly as playing with an Ouija Board.

An encouraging word:  WHOM SHOULD YOU FEAR?Horror movies traffic in terror. Each scene is designed to keep audiences on the edge of their seats, terrified at what might happen next. That is frightening but fake. Isaiah 8:13 tells us whom to truly fear: The Lord Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy, He is the one you are to fear, He is the one you are to dread. Why? It is God alone who has power over life and death, and He holds the decision of your eternal destiny in His hands. Don’t be afraid of things that go “bump” in the night or the images on a movie screen, which are concocted to terrify. Fear the Lord to whom you will answer for your deeds when you die.

The Witch You Paid For

Wednesday, July 30, 2014

Popular witchcraft book.

In the 60’s Margot Adler was a social activist, druggie, and political radical. In the 80’s onward, she was an outspoken occultist and national proponent of witchcraft. She was herself a witch in the Gardner mode, and an “elder” in the Covenant of the Goddess. [See my book Larson’s Book of World Religions for an analysis of her mentor, British witch Gerald Gardner. To order CLICK HERE.] Her book, Drawing Down the Moon, first published in 1979 was reissued in 2006. It was a call for a return to pagan practices. The blurb from her publisher glowingly describes the book (which I’ve read) as providing “inspiration in ancient deities” [read that DEMONS]. Her father was a Jewish psychotherapist and collaborated with Freud. She died July 28, 2014, two days ago, from terminal cancer.

Of course, she had a right to believe anything she wanted, but for three decades she was on the payroll of National Public Radio and hosted a popular radio program. Adler’s salary was in part possible due to a $200 million gift to NPR given by the widow of McDonald’s founder, Ray Kroc. (Think of that the next time you get a Big Mac.) In addition NPR and PBS (Public Broadcasting) get $445 million in taxpayers’ largess every year. NPR says it gets a minimal amount of that. But imagine NPR hiring a Catholic priest or a Protestant Pastor to host a radio show. Unthinkable. The devil has such a grip on our culture, and witchcraft is so widely accepted, that no one blinked at the idea that a witch was on the government’s payroll (whatever the amount doesn’t matter) at the expense of the public. I take no pleasure in her death, and it’s sad when anyone who obviously doesn’t know the Lord dies. Her life is over, but I pray that the legacy of Uncle Sam’s implicit promotion of witchcraft doesn’t live on.

An encouraging word:  NONE SHOULD PERISHEzekiel declared (33:11) on behalf of the Lord, “I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked.” In the New Testament Peter said (1 Peter 3:9), “The Lord is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” God doesn’t want anyone to go to Hell. Peter also tells us that the Lord is “longsuffering” with regards to the evil in men’s lives. But those who choose to reject God determine their own eternal destination.  Don’t be like those who rail against God for sending anyone to eternal punishment. God has no pleasure in that, but the angels do rejoice when a single soul is saved.

Tom Petty’s Pettiness

Tuesday, July 29, 2014

Long-time rock star, Tom Petty.

I’ve always liked most of Tom Petty’s music. It’s not that he’s a great singer. He isn’t. But his songs have that certain feel, and a hook you can’t get out of your head. My favorite? “I Won’t Back Down.” To me, it sort of a personal spiritual warfare anthem, although I’m certain that was nowhere what Petty had in mind when he wrote it:

Well, I won’t back down, no I won’t back down.

You can stand me up at the gates of Hell,

                But I don’t back down.

                No I’ll stand my ground, won’t be turned around . . .

                I won’t back down.

But let’s get one thing straight. I won’t be buying his latest album Hypnotic Eye. Why? Petty has taken a sudden turn in the direction of attacking Christianity. Petty calls the release a “moral album” about “social betrayal.” You’d think that there’s enough social betrayal out there to sing about: abortion on demand; Obamacare chipping away at personal, spiritual liberties; child sexual trafficking; the rapid acceptance of legal weed, to name a few social ills. (Have you heard? The New York Times last week endorsed marijuana legalization.) But Petty had to get petty and go after Christians. He attacks the Catholic Church and its sex abuse scandals and rails against “every man of God that lives with hidden devils.” He also infers that faith in God starts “all wars.” But he’s really past the pall when he claims that “no one’s got Christ more wrong than the Christians.” For such a smart rocker, that’s downright dumb. But it will play well with the cynical millennial crowd. For a guy who admits being raised in the territory of Southern Baptists, he’s awfully selective in his ignorance of religion. Instead of a clever tunesmith, he’s starting to sound like a cynical, old rocker.

Not all that’s on the album is bad. He laments drug deaths at concerts and financial corruption that is “power drunk.” But whether he mean it or now, he’s fighting the culture war on the wrong side. The devil likes songs like this that buy into the anti-God bitterness of this generation that is soaked in social media, progressive politics, and demonic entertainment. It reinforces a hateful attitude toward Christianity that is demonically self-serving. I still like his earlier stuff, but as far as listening to Petty’s petty, new rant against the Lord, count me out. And I won’t back down!

An encouraging word:  ANGER AGAINST GODThere’s a lot of anger against God in our society today. But that’s not new. “Why do the heathen rage?” David asked in Psalm 2:1. In response to the impotent anger of men who would defy The Almighty One, Psalm 2:4 says that, “The One enthroned in heaven laughs: the Lord scoffs at them.” I don’t know about you, but I have a tendency to get my dander up when I hear people blaspheme God. And well I should be angry at such demonic arrogance. But there is also a time to laugh at the pathetic puniness of humans who would dare to indict the King of Kings for any presumed wrong. The next time you’re tempted to hit back when men strike out against Christ, remember how foolish it is and have a chuckle.
