Last week there was another senseless shooting. This was closer to home, my home. It occurred at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona, a little over two hours from where I currently live. A freshman, Steven Jones, 18, has been charged with first-degree murder. According to police, Jones got into a fight with other students, took a handgun from his car, and started shooting. Three were wounded and one was killed. They were all shot multiple times. The victims were members of Delta Chi fraternity. Jones was a pledge at another fraternity, Sigma Chi. It all happened the same day that President Obama was in Roseburg, Oregon to console the families of nine who were killed at Umpqua Community College just eight days earlier.

Here’s what makes this case unique. Our family knew who the shooter was. Jones was a Christian homeschooled kid who had attended many of the same Phoenix-area homeschool functions as my wife and three daughters. Once it was known who did the shooting, homeschoolers who knew Jones simply couldn’t believe it. Obviously, all the information about this incident isn’t known yet, but I’ve already cited that Jones was born-again. Perhaps he suffered some kind of mental breakdown. But the facts are that he was raised in a solid-Christian community, and shot four people, killing one. It seems that some kind of rage overtook him. The roots of that no one knows yet.

I don’t wish to pass any stern, unwarranted judgments about this situation, and certainly don’t want to reflect on what might have gone wrong in his family. But good Christian kids just don’t shoot four people unless . . . . You know where I’m headed. Unless the devil is in the details somewhere. When I entitled this blog “Demons Make Christians Kill” I didn’t mean to suggest that people with demons are robotic zombies unflinchingly doing evil deeds on command from demons. Demons “make” them do evil by pushing them to the edge of insanity and irrationality. Knowing what I do about similar such cases, it’s not hard to imagine that Steven Jones was under severe demonic oppression for some reason we’ll never know. It wasn’t dealt with and this is the result.

If you know someone who is exhibiting erratic behavior or seems to be losing touch with reality, get them help. If they tell you of past trauma which hasn’t been processed through counseling and healing prayers, get them to someone who can intervene. Christians can go over the edge and commit terrible deeds. And yes, even if they are Christians they can have demons who “make” them kill.

An encouraging word: GOD’S WONDER AND AMAZEMENT.

When the lame man at the Beautiful Gate in Acts 3:10 was healed, the Bible says people were “filled with wonder and amazement.” Look around today. Our culture seems to be filled more with cynicism and outright hatred toward the things of God. Perhaps one reason is that we’ve lost the demonstration of His miraculous power, silencing the critics. Tragically, all too many churches have what John and Peter did not have, “silver and gold.” But in accumulating the riches of this world, some Christians seem to have lost the riches of Christ’s power. Will you agree in prayer with me today that Christians will recover what we lost and once again impress a lost world with “wonder and amazement” at the demonstration of God’s might?

“You’re the reason God made Oklahoma,” sang David Frizzell and Shelly West, back in 1981. “Losing you left a pretty good cowboy with nothing to hold on to.” Nearly 25 years later, the Supreme Court of Oklahoma has determined that God didn’t make anything in Oklahoma and nothing that He says matters much anymore. As I head to Oklahoma City next week for seminar on October 16 (CLICK HERE for seminar information.) something will be missing: a massive granite monument on the grounds of the Oklahoma State Capitol. Installed in 2012, by an act of the state legislature, the monument, engraved with the Ten Commandments was removed this week. Thanks to a lawsuit filed by a Baptist – that’s right I said BAPTIST – minister fought to have it eradicated. The minister, Bruce Prescott, a professor at the University of Oklahoma, said he was concerned that people of other faiths, or no faith, might be offended and their rights as citizens infringed upon.

And which of the “Shalt Nots” on the monument were so offensive? God’s commands to refrain from murder, adultery, stealing, lying, coveting? But some argued, “What if Satanist want to display Lucifer (Actually, they tried to.)? It wasn’t Luciferians who pledged their “lives, fortunes, and sacred honor” to establish this great republic. And which other religion to be accommodated has such a codified moral code that speaks so clearly to the most noble virtues of humanity? None. Let me see if I understand this correctly. In an age when Planned Parenthood harvests fetuses, rape and molestation are epidemic, and the rate of illegitimacy in the U. S. is over 40% of all live births, a Baptist minister should actually be worried about a stone carving saying DON’T DO IT?

From my perspective of spiritual warfare, that Baptist preacher is an agent of Satan, I care not what his stated motives. His actions, aided by atheists, have pushed the Oklahoma Supreme Court to allow demons the right to attack the good citizens of Oklahoma in unprecedented ways. God DID make Oklahoma, as He did all of us. To deny the Almighty Creator his role in human affairs is to grant license to Lucifer to wreak his havoc on the Sooner State.

An encouraging word: SIN NEVER SATISFIES

As I was recently reading about the life of King David, I was reminded again of that awful account in 2 Samuel 13:15 when David’s son Amnon raped and incested his sister Tamar. After Amnon’s scheming to consummate the awful act, the Bible tells us that Amnon’s feelings toward Tamar were such that “the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her.” That’s the way with sin. It never delivers what it promises. Whatever evil desires may be in your heart today, repent quickly. Even if you get what you sinfully want, it won’t satisfy afterwards and you will sorely regret that you did it.

The somewhat wacky attorney who represented Madalyn Murray O’Hair before the Supreme Court in 1963 died September 26 at age 88.  It was Leonard Kerpelman who made it possible for O’Hair to get prayer kicked out of public schools. Kerpelman is a testament to what one evil man can do to change the course of history. He defended his actions at the time by saying, “I see no constitutional objection to the study of religion, history of religion, or the study of the Bible as literature.” But the devil had other plans. The practical effect of that decision has removed any reverent references to God from the education of our youth. Though Kerpelman argued that he was only objecting to what he called a “sectarian ceremony” the result has been to ban baccalaureate services, prayer at the beginning of football games, and even personal declarations of faith by graduates.

Life didn’t end well for either Kerpelman or O’Hair. The woman he defended ended up murdered by her former office manager. Kerpelman ended his legal career disbarred for disrupting a legal proceeding in court.  At his passing, his deceived daughter said, “My father loved and stood up for his country and the intent of the Constitution of the United States from the start of his career until the end of his days.” Another perspective would be that he shredded the meaning of American freedom by removing God from educational discourse. One look at any day’s newspaper headlines shows that the moral world around us has gone downhill since then. Today, you can’t read a Bible in the classroom but the nurse’s dispensary can give you free birth control pills to pursue fornication without parental consent.

Ironically, the O’Hair child over whom Kerpelman’s  battle was fought, William, later became a Christian and an outspoken opponent of both Kerpelman and his mother. In this case God had the last laugh. In terms of where Kerpelman is likely spending eternity, Satan is having the last laugh.

An encouraging word: DON’T BE A FOOL

Psalm 53:1 – “The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” In our culture we elevate those whose skepticism questions God’s existence. But this ancient truth can’t be discounted. William Murray, the son of famed atheist Madalyn Murray O’Hair, wrote in his book My Life without God, “My mother was not just Madalyn Murray O’Hair, the atheist leader. She was an evil person who led many to hell. That is hard for me to say about my own mother but it is true. When I was a young boy of ten or eleven years old she would come home and brag about spending the day in X-rated movie theaters in downtown Baltimore. She particularly enjoyed hiring convicted murderers who had served their time but were unrepentant about what they had done. She got a sense of power out of having men in her employ who had taken human life.” Ms. O’Hair was eventually murdered by one of these men. Truly, she was a fool. Don’t be a fool like her by denying God in your life.

I’ve heard of instances in which mentally disturbed people have actually gouged out their own eye(s) in response to Matthew 5:29: If your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. But a North Carolina woman has taken this a step further. Jewel Shuping, age 30, suffers from a mental malady called Body Identity Integrity Disorder (BIID). She’s in excellent health but doesn’t want to be. She desires disability. Shuping says, “This is the way (blind) I was supposed to be born.” But Shuping didn’t stop with wishing blindness on herself; she sought out a psychologist who helped her achieve blindness by pouring drain cleaner in each pupil until she lost her eyesight.

How do I explain this? Clearly this is the work of Satan. Putting a fancy name on it like BIID obfuscates the fact that self-inducing blindness isn’t just aberrational, it’s downright wicked. Demonic. Perhaps Shuping has demons who induced her to do this. Or she may have a generational alter. For example, that ancestral, dissociated identity state, inherited genetically as a memory imprint by Shuping, may have actually been blinded at some time in history. This started a curse, passed on through the DNA, disposing future generations to want to be blind. A typical scenario would be this: Shuping did something to open the door to demons in her life, which then activated the ancient curse, compelling her to want to be blind. Don’t underestimate what demons can do if given the chance. This case of deliberate self-blinding also gives a new slant on the words of 1 John 2:11: “He who hates his brother is in darkness . . . the darkness has blinded his eyes.”

 An encouraging word:  GOD BLESSES ABUNDANTLY

What is your need today? Do you think that God is too busy to respond or that others may have greater challenges than you? We often fail to ask of the Lord for illogical reasons such as these. Ephesians 3:20 reminds us that Jesus wants to bless us “exceedingly, abundantly above all that we ask or think . . .” That’s pretty big. Stop what you’re doing and ask largely of the Lord. Expand your faith beyond your personal efforts to succeed, and live with the expectation that God will intervene on your behalf in an abundant way. He wants to and He is waiting for you to ask.

CONUNDRUM: A Confusing or difficult question.

In my Personal Spiritual Encounter sessions I am constantly amazed at how many people who seek my help have dabbled in the occult. We’re talking Christians here, not those who are ignorant of biblical teaching. They tell of calling psychics or going to fortune tellers. Even seeking séances. When I ask if they knew such actions constituted witchcraft and opened them to demons, they often shrug their shoulders as if it were no more serious than a parking ticket. The first reason for this disconnect is the lack of warnings from the pulpit. Most church congregants tell me they’ve never heard a sermon about such things. And they’ve certainly not heard a message about the dangers of getting demons from occult investigation. All such things go under the heading of divination, and it’s not a minor infraction to God.

Simply put, divination is searching for what can’t be determined by the natural senses. The very word “divination” is found in most Bible translations such as the Authorized King James Version (KJV) and the New International Version (NIV). See, for example, the condemnations of Deuteronomy 18:10, 2 Kings 17:17, Jeremiah 14:14, Ezekiel 12:24, 13:6, 21:23, and Acts 16:16 in the KJV. In the NIV consider Genesis 44:5, Leviticus 19:26, Deuteronomy 18:14, 1 Samuel 15:23, and Isaiah 2:6. Examples of such indulgences would be horoscopes, fortune telling, palm reading, Ouija Boards, séances, Runes, and consulting tarot cards. These examples are by no means exhaustive. Satan lures victims to attempt pulling back the veil of the unknown. The devil wants humans to dispense with our trusting God for the future instead of peering into the realm of reality beyond what can be discerned by bodily senses..

“The foolishness of God is wiser than men,” Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 1:25. I think about this scripture every time I hear some pompous pundit of science declare there is no God; all that exists somehow happened by fortuitous accident. Whether it is the creation of the universe or the moral law of God, mere men somehow think they know better. But take all the accumulated wisdom of all the ages, add it together and you are nowhere near the wisdom of the Almighty. That alone should spur us to read His Word with greater enthusiasm. This past weekend, my good friend pastor James Vivian brought to my attention something that had slipped under my spiritual radar: a demonic invasion at the highest realm of modern science. The European Organization (EU) for Nuclear Research (CERN) operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world, located near Geneva Switzerland. CERN with 2,513 staff represents 608 universities and research facilities. CERN features not only the world’s largest particle accelerator but it is also the birthplace of the World Wide Web. It might be considered the premiere scientific research center of the world. And what do you see when you walk through the doors of this prestigious place of science? An idol of the Hindu god Shiva, in his incarnation as Lord Nataraja, Lord of the Dance (also known as Shakti, a.k.a. Jezebel). Some definitions will help:

SHIVA: One of three main Hindu gods; the destroyer of worlds; spirit of death

SHAKTI: The energy of the universe; the feminine divine (archetype of Jezebel); psycho-sexual serpent power of the kundalini in yoga

NATARAJA: Two-legged, two-armed Shiva as Lord of the Dance; he dances to destroy the universe

There you have it, Shiva as demon of Death, sexually cohabiting with Shakti to achieve spiritual enlightenment. Strange. The nations of the EU owe their economic, political, and scientific advancements to the Christian faith, but now choose to celebrate a Hindu demon whose worship has, in part, kept India bound to poverty, disease, and a racist caste system for millennia. Imagine the public and political outcry if CERN had placed a Christian cross where Shiva dances death. The protest would have been horrendous. An encouraging word: GIVE DOUBLE HONOR.

There is an anti-clerical attitude in our culture. Ministers are often ridiculed in the media, and when polls are taken, they are often at the bottom of respected professions. With all the infidelity of megachurch pastors, and child abuse scandals in the Catholic Church, perhaps this is to be expected. But don’t let a few rotten apples determine your perspective. Paul told Timothy (1 Timothy 5:17) that those who direct the affairs of church life are “worthy of double honor.” Take time today to say something nice about your pastor. Call or send him an email, thanking him for his sacrifices on behalf of the gospel. Give double honor to those in spiritual authority who are genuine in their calling, and God will bless you.

Let me say up front that I don’t want to insult the good folks of Detroit. I was there last weekend and met some amazing Christians. Two powerful, public exorcisms took place Friday night. The Personal Spiritual Encounters were incredible; miracle after miracle of healing and deliverance. But let’s be real, the devil is at work in Detroit. Recently, Satanists erected a huge idol to worship Lucifer, a nine-foot, one-ton bronze statue. (Read our blog of July 16, 2015, “Devil in Detroit” by CLICKING HERE.) For decades, Detroit has been a mecca for the worst of heavy metal music. When I lectured in public schools before I went into the ministry, I dreaded speaking in Detroit schools. They were hotbeds, even back then, of extreme leftist politics and social anarchism. Now to Detroit’s problems of inner-city decay and bankruptcy, add another example of the devil’s debacles in Detroit.

The photos above were taken at the new Detroit airport as I passed through this past weekend. Remember the days when airports had chapels for souls seeking solace on their journeys? Then they added yoga rooms for the weary travelers. Now, it has morphed into simply “reflection” centers, whatever that is. I looked inside this one in Detroit. It was a small, round room. Empty. No cross. No Bible. Not even a Koran. Not a single thing. A bare, quiet room to, well, what else, reflect. But on what? Whom? And what’s the point? I guess if a traveler is looking to get away from the hustle and bustle, why not be someplace that is quiet? But what if an airplane passenger is seeking help from something or someone transcendent? Like God? Out of luck. The leaders of Detroit apparently have given up on Divine intervention. Just go inside and look inside . . . yourself.

This is the culture of America. Churches designed to make you feel comfortable. No mention of sin, hell, or Satan and demons. And our societal approach to religion is equally anemic. No need to pray. No need to rebuke the devil or cancel curses. Just reflect. How sweet. How diabolical.

An encouraging word: BE SAVED FROM PERVERSITY   “Be saved from this perverse generation!” Wow, that’s a bold way to deliver a sermon. It’s not the kind of thing you’d hear in most churches today. We’ve accommodated all kinds of evil in our culture to the extent that nothing is perverse any more. But these words of the Apostle Peter in Acts 2:40 comprise the message of the first sermon preached in New Testament times. The result was 3,000 souls coming to Christ as Savior. Think about your own life and what kinds of perversity you may have allowed. If you want to be obedient to the life with Jesus demanded by Christians in the beginning, start by being “saved” from the evil that is around you.

Remember the seven sons of Sceva in Acts chapter 19? These “vagabond,” roaming self-styled exorcists, watched the Apostle Paul cast out demons by the name of Jesus and tried to do the same thing, with disastrous results. When they tried to invoke Christ’s name, the demons jumped on them, ripped their clothes off, beat them up, and sent them running naked and wounded. A bit of exorcist humor, unless you were one of the seven sons. Well, it’s happened again, another ill-advised exorcism. Only this time, someone got killed. Stabbed to death. This past week in London, an Islamic exorcist named Zakariyya Islam was murdered while trying to cast demons out of a man by quoting the Koran at a “black magic” healing center. An associate of Zakariyya was quoted as saying, “We do have enemies in this field because there are a lot of people who don’t like our work.” What the associate didn’t mention is that the Muslim exorcist’s so-called healing center also offered advice on sorcery, witchcraft, and the evil eye. And they even do this by Skype! (Wonder if they reading my web site?) Said the associate who lived to tell, “Listening to the Koran you can get rid of it all [demons].” Well, apparently not.

Perhaps this Muslim exorcist meant well. Maybe he thought that calling on Allah could free the man who was to murder him. But he was wrong. DEADLY wrong. As the sons of Sceva tragically learned, there is only one name under heaven that has the power to set people free from demons – Jesus of Nazareth! Philippians 2:9 tells us that the name of Jesus is a name which is above every other name. And at the mention of that name those “under the earth” must bow and confess that Christ is Lord. As the seventy disciples, sent by Jesus to cast out demons, declared upon return from their mission, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” It’s too late to get across that message to Zakariyya Islam. But it’s not too late to tell everyone everywhere that only Jesus, the Son of God, has the authority and power to make demons flee. And we in whom He dwells can do what He did!

 An encouraging word: KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS

Many people may claim to be a follower of Christ, but there is a sure test for confirmation that one is a Christian, 1 John 2:3: “We know Him if we keep His commandments.” That’s very straightforward and simply put. The test of Christian character is not what someone says, but what they do. Not what they profess, but what they possess on a daily basis. While we are cautioned about judging (Matthew 7:1) with unrighteous and condemnatory judgment, there is a litmus test as to whether an individual is walking with Christ – whether they are obedient to His teachings. Do you know Him, and are you keeping His commandments?

As we all know, Hillary Clinton is having her problems in the polls. But I came across several reports that indicate an even more serious problem. Not with the electorate, with evangelical Christians. To a decidedly liberal audience she referenced conservative Christians by saying, “Deep-seated cultural codes, religious beliefs and structural biases have to be changed.” I supposed she is referring to issues like abortion and gay rights, and she is certainly entitled to confront these topics. But what’s disturbing is the idea that deeply-held religious beliefs “have to be changed.” I’m not sure what that means. Change isn’t necessarily bad, depending on the issue, but what’s scary is the idea that government should be in the business of enforcing the change of faith beliefs. If her ideas don’t concern you, note that she also said, “I don’t believe you change hearts. I believe you change laws.” We’re not talking about debate and persuasion by open discussion. We’re talking about political proctors roaming the American landscape, looking for deviations from what’s politically correct, or at least that is what her views seem to imply.

Is she talking about some old Soviet or Orwellian-style system? She’s vague, but it’s not comforting to read between the lines. As for me, suppose some bureaucrat decides that exorcism is a medieval practice deleterious to the emotional health of recipients and should be outlawed? Would I get a midnight knock at the door from the thought police? If my “structural bias” is that many problems relegated to the psych ward are actually better dealt with by casting out demons, would I have to change or else? Every minister of the gospel is in the business of changing hearts. Are we supposed to forgo the gospel and be coerced by state planners who decide what we can and cannot preach? Perhaps Hillary’s intentions are more benign. I certainly pray so. But I’m not so sure that we aren’t on the cusp of a need kind of intolerance aimed at beliefs as well as actions.

 An encouraging word:  THE WORD IN POWER

Paul said that the gospel he preached “did not come in word only, but also in power” (1 Thessalonians 1:5). It seems to me that we have a lot of words today, but not a lot of power. We live in a time where there has never been more preaching of the gospel on radio, TV, in print and in person. But most of it is just words, words, words. Are you like me and long to see the “power?” I don’t mean talking about power and telling stories of some mission field far away. I mean power here and now, right where we live.  That’s why the ministry of deliverance is so important. It demonstrates spiritual power in the here and now. I encourage you to make a goal of pursuing real power, the power of spiritual warfare.

An atheist web site recently displayed an unusual bit of honesty. In fact they trumpeted a fact that should have been an embarrassment. They reported on an original letter, written by Charles Darwin, the father of the evolutionary hypothesis, that is about to be auctioned for an estimated $70,000 to $90,000! The missive, hand-written, was Darwin’s response to a November 23, 1880 question from a young lawyer. The barrister, Francis McDermott asked, “Give me a Yes or No to the question, ‘Do you believe in the New Testament?'” Darwin replied the very next day: “I am sorry to inform you that I do not believe in the Bible as a divine revelation and therefore not in Jesus Christ as the son of God.”

On the face of it, this is no great shock. Darwin’s antipathy toward Christianity was clearly a motivating factor behind On the Origen of Species. His father was a so-called “freethinker” (a more polite English way of describing 19th century atheism) and his mother was a godless Unitarian, those folks who believe in nothing and everything. Ironically, Charles Darwin’s father had him baptized as an Anglican, perhaps hedging his bet on eternal life. At the time, the Senior Darwin, as the parent of Charles, would have had to renounce the devil as part of the liturgy. Such a confession was obviously not taken seriously, as the baby Darwin was to become one of the best evangelists for Satan in human history.

The purpose of this blog isn’t to debunk evolution. There’s no room for that debate here. Suffice to say that, despite some elements of logic and truth, the ultimate point of Darwin’s theory is flawed and diabolical. According to the Bible so despised by Darwin, humanity DID NOT arise from lower life forms, directed by chance and “natural selection” rather than the hand of God. If Darwin was right, there is no God and no devil. And everything that I do every day to fight demons is a pointless sham, because according to “Origen” there is only the material world and nothing supernatural exists. There is no compromise here. You cannot be a Darwinian evolutionist and a deliverance minister. Impossible. They can’t coexist. I know of no one who casts out demons who discounts the creation account of Genesis. If such a person exists, very real demons would make short work of this individual and drag him to the same hell where Darwin likely exists in eternal torment.

An encouraging word:  DON’T BE ASHAMED OF CHRIST.

“I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ,” Paul wrote in Romans 1:16. In America today, with pervasive Christian media and thousands of Christian organizations that’s not a remarkable statement. But in Paul’s time it was revolutionary. Christians were being killed for their faith. It was a crime not to worship the Emperor of Rome. Believers literally met in underground catacombs. To say that we today have it easier is an understatement. Think for a moment. If you lived in the time of Paul, would you be as bold as he was? If such times of persecution come again, will you be ashamed of Christ?
