The Power of Curses

Considering that I’ve written a 175-page book entitled “Curse Breaking” and our International School of Exorcism teaches at length on this topic, it’s challenging to give a simple understanding of curses; but for many unfamiliar with this concept, anything we share here is a big step forward. First, curses have power to affect anyone, including Christians. Second, the effect of curses can be eliminated by declarative, confessional prayer. Third, curses can be intentional and deliberate, such as the ritual of a witch-doctor to bring harm. They can also be unintentional, as in the case of an angry parent who blurts out to a child, “You’re a loser. You’ll never amount to anything in life.” The most important thing to know about curses is the truth of Proverbs 26:2: “An undeserved curse has no effect” (TLB). How can you make curses against you “undeserving?” 

Curses come from many sources: idolatrous rituals of our pagan ancestors; acts of violence and immorality from forebears in our bloodline; words and action of those presently in authority over us. And no one is immune. Embracing faith in Christ is a strong mitigating factor. But being born-again is no guarantee that 100% of all curse consequences have been removed. The potential power to break curses is promised in Galatians 3:13 (Christ was made a “curse for us”). But that promise must be possessed by faith. It’s not automatic. Revelation 22:3 promises a time of “no more curse,” but that is future prophetic. In the now, for those who have not proactively claimed the promise that we are “redeemed” from curses (Galatians 3:13), the power of actionable, spoken, and ritualized evil can hinder a believer’s walk with God.  

What’s to be done about this? Just as Romans 10:9-10 teaches salvation comes by confession and belief, so does deliverance from the power of curses. When we confess that a curse is broken and believe in our hearts by faith that it is done, a curse has no more power. Its effects may linger as we seek healing and restoration for the damage done but going forward it cannot invoke additional evil. So, if you haven’t broken curses, get started. Agree in prayer with a spouse, trusted friend, or family member, according to Matthew 18:19 which declares that prayer is effectual when two or more agree. Declare that curses are broken over whatever evil you are aware of with your ancestors. Close the doors to curses that you opened in your past, such as dabbling in the occult or New Age practices.

Online Witchcraft

In the days before the internet, to participate in witchcraft one had to secretly seek out a coven, possible go sky-clad (nude) in the dark of a forest, light candles at the points of a pentagram, take a sacred sword, an athame, in hand, and summon the elementals of the four directions. Today, witchcraft is only a mouse-click away with thousands of web sites dedicated to the dark arts. But witchcraft online isn’t always so obvious as the procurement of spells for love or money. It can come in the form of pseudo-scientific technology. Take the QU Wave devices.  

I’m focusing on this line of products because a recent Skype Encounter client wore around her neck a black box about the size of a cigarette pack. She’d paid $300 because the distributors of this device had promised, in online ads, that she’d be “free from electronic harassment and pollution, conquer stress, restore proper immunity levels, overcome sleep problems and harness the power of the universe” by generating a “protective cocoon” around her body. The device also promised protection from the attack of psychic witchcraft harassment by infusing her food with chi energy. This woman was a Christian, a devout and sincere woman, but like many believers today, she didn’t understand how cleverly witchcraft is disseminated online. During our Skype session she was delivered from the demons she’d gotten from these occult indulgences. 

To further understand such dangers, here’s a few definitions of terminology used in online witchcraft: 

  • “Solfeggio” refers to resonances which are supposedly the frequencies from which the universe was formed; like the Eastern mystical chant OM. The occult connection is clear. 
  • “Schumann Resonance” is extremely low frequencies in the earth’s electromagnetic field that are triggered by lightening discharges in the atmosphere. At worst one might be affected while walking outdoors in a lightning storm, but who’s dumb enough to do that?
  • “Chi” is the Chinese version of the universal life-energy force; Taoism’s version of god. In Hinduism and yoga this force is known as prana; mana in Polynesian lore; lung in Tibetan Buddhism; manitou to native Americans; vital energy in various New Age sects.

All these terms are ways to described demonic powers operating under the guise of some ethereal force flowing through the universe, often in the form of polarizing opposite, the yin/yang. Those who tap into these powers operate in witchcraft and Shamanism and risk demonic possession. My Skype client was exorcised of the demons associated with such beliefs. Others with no knowledge of spiritual warfare, won’t be so fortunate. Don’t you be a victim of online witchcraft.

Revolving Door Demons

The Gospel of Luke, chapter 11, contains one of the most misunderstood scriptures concerning demons. This confusion is exploited by those who refuse to accept, or deny and denigrate, the reality of exorcism in our age. Here is the passage in question: When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he says, “I will return to my house from which I came.” And when he comes, he finds it swept and put in order. Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first (Luke 11:24-26 NKJV).
Let’s focus on the reference to the expelled spirit returning with seven more demons worse than him. I’ve heard deliverance ministers sternly warn those who’ve been liberated that they must be careful not to go back to the sins that allowed their possession to occur in the first place. Good advice. But that’s not what Christ is emphasizing. Luke 11 isn’t primarily about the exorcised demon returning with seven worse companions. The problem emphasized by these verses is what the individual DOESN’T do. Namely, he doesn’t fill the house which has been emptied.
When a demon is cast out, the person’s soul, their “house” is cleansed. The disorder is ordered. Chaos is replaced with peace. Those set free from demons often exclaim, “I feel light. A burden is lifted. I can think more clearly. The confusion is gone. I’m not tormented anymore.” Their house is clean. But they need to fill the newly vacated soul so there isn’t room for evil to return. Instead, they are often prodded by well-meaning ministers to stay away from what was wrong; okay, but they also need to be encouraged to pursue that which is right. Just having a clean house, being delivered, won’t keep the devil away.

The house of one delivered needs to be “filled.” With what? Filled with the Spirit (Eph. 5:18); the fruits of righteousness (Phil. 1:11); joy (1 Tim. 1:4); the fullness of God (Eph. 3:19); goodness and knowledge (Rom 15:14). Being delivered from demons is about more than what you stop doing. It’s also about what you should start doing: A daily walk in the Word. Faithfulness in church. The fellowship of the saints. Service in the body of Christ. Demons seek to return and inhabit a dwelling which was emptied but never fully occupied by the presence of Christ, the wisdom of His Word, and the fruits of the Spirit. Have you had demons cast out? Then, don’t repeat the sins that led to your bondage. But more importantly, adopt positive patterns of biblical behavior that will keep the doorway for demons you once opened from revolving into an even worse possession later. As we say, GET FREE, STAY FREE, LIVE FREE!

Harry Potter Christmas

This has gone way too far. Stores hadn’t even taken down all the demonic Halloween paraphernalia when I spotted the above display. I wasn’t surprised at the unseemly jump-start on the commercialization of Christmas. But connecting witchcraft to Christmas? That’s outrageous, blasphemous, and an apocalyptic commentary on our times. Christmas should be about Christ. Harry Potter is about witchcraft. The same Bible that heralds the birth of Christ also condemns witchcraft as an evil abomination (repugnant, disgraceful, abhorrent, outrageous, monstrous): “Let no one be found among you . . . who engages in witchcraft. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord” (Deuteronomy 18:9-13). How has such a spiritual contradiction overcome our culture?
It’s been a long time coming. The old frog-in-the-boiling-water thing. Turn up the heat gradually enough and the frog won’t know he’s burning to death. Movies, TV, entertainment, Hollywood, and pop culture long ago declared war on Christianity. But it took the wizard of Hogwarts to finally desensitize all but the most stalwart Christians. November 15, 2005 –14 YEARS AGO—a writer in the supposedly evangelical journal “Christianity Today” wrote, “In the last five years, I’ve noticed a gradual attitude shift toward Harry Potter among Christians. Though many still condemn the series they seem to be diminishing in number even as others write in praise of it.” REMEMBER, that was 14 years ago. It’s a thousand times worse now! As a deliverance minister with 40+ years of documented spiritual warfare experience, I’ve performed more exorcisms than any living person. The majority of Christians I minister to have practiced yoga, explored Eastern religions, used tarot cards, played with Ouija boards, have seen psychics, and followed astrology. Many Christians have been co-opted by the lies of the New Age and spiritualism. Interest in occult-sourced enneagrams is exploding. Mindful meditation has crept into evangelical prayer circles. Some respected ministries are telling Christians that they SHOULD see into the spirit world and behold angels and demons with regularity. Forty years ago, when I began deliverance, less than 5% of those coming to me for help would have had this much spiritual garbage in their lives. Today, well-meaning but biblically illiterate victims by the millions are frequently caught in this web of deceit and bondage.

More than 90% of the people who objectively manifest demons in my presence are demonically bound because of the witchcraft practiced by their ancestors. Most suffering souls who seek deliverance from our ministry have had demons passed on to them at birth because their forebears were sorcerers like Harry. I say with complete certitude that anything and everything to do with Harry Potter, witchcraft, and the New Age was hatched in Hell and is antithetical to all that Christianity stands for. It’s 100% evil, worthy of the most severe biblical condemnation. There can be no accommodation with ANYTHING that reeks of witchcraft, literal or fantastical. Let’s keep Christ in Christmas and Harry Potter in hell, where he belongs.

An encouraging word: GOD’S WORD IS TRUE.
The testimony of the Lord is sure, says the King James Version (Psalm 19:7). The NIV puts it: The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy. Either way, the emphasis is on the certainty of what God says. Remember, Satan’s first deception in the Garden was to question God’s veracity with the doubtful question, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from the tree in the garden’?” That tactic has never changed: get mankind to disobey God’s law by planting doubt about the truthfulness of God’s Word. When you are tempted to sin or cut moral corners, don’t forget the first temptation of Eve, and be convinced that what God says He really means.

Who can you tell? Where can you go? Who will listen?

Many who schedule a Personal Spiritual Encounter say the same thing.
There was no one I could tell what’s happened to me. I couldn’t find anyone, anywhere who was willing to listen to my pain and believe that demons were attacking me. No one would listen, especially those in the church.
Today, my Personal Encounter was with a doctor who said these things. If this man had told his peers what he was going through, he might have placed his entire career in jeopardy. Lawyers, teachers, social workers, professional people, those with serious responsibilities often can’t risk talking about evil spirits and demonic torment.
Many others are in the same trap. Friends are frightened to hear talk of demons. Pastors brush them off with, “Pray more, read your Bible more.” Family members are confused.
