Lesser of Two Evils

How can anyone clearly disambiguate this election, that is, make clear the real choice before us? Is it possible to remove all uncertainty about which is the correct moral choice between Clinton and Trump? Should we simply choose the lesser of two evils? And what does that mean? In politics, the idea of a “lesser evil” has meant supporting, at times, corrupt regimes overseas, if that government presents a better option than what might replace it. Case in point: at the end of the Second World War, some dictatorships were left in place because they shared American ideological and financial goals. The Allies, for example, thought that Stalin was the lesser of two evils compared to Hitler. But Fascism’s holocaust turned out to be less oppressive than the Soviet murder of millions and the enslavement of 15 countries under the heel of Russian totalitarianism. Yet who is to argue for which was the worst; being a prisoner of Lenin’s Gulag or a Jewish victim of Hitler’s gas ovens.

It gets murky, doesn’t it? Now consider our upcoming election. Most folks I talk to are disgusted with both candidates. They also think that a vote for a third-party candidate is actually a vote for Clinton or Trump, both of whom have disapproval ratings of almost 60%. So, does voting for one wrong make a right? The great theologian Thomas Aquinas wrestled with this kind of thinking in his “Summa Theoligica” (which I’m currently reading just for “fun”), giving the example of taking a human life in self-defense. His conclusion: the good outweighs the bad when the situation in question is so bad that exercising an otherwise unacceptable choice causes the least amount of harm. In other words, choose what you believe is the lesser of two evils. If you have a gun, shoot the homicidal intruder before he kills you and your family; but don’t do evil that good may abound. (1 Peter 3:9-don’t render evil for evil.)

Who to vote for? A man of distasteful, locker-room boasts or a woman of expedient, and possibility illegal, ethics? Without telling you who to vote for, I advise when you enter the voting booth, think about your constitutional freedoms, cherish your right for your faith to be free from government intrusion, and remember the unborn.

An encouraging word: STOP COMPLAINING

“How long shall I bear with this evil congregation who complain against me?” The Lord spoke this word in Numbers 14:27, against the “murmuring” children of Israel, who were never satisfied. This scripture shows how much the Lord hates spiritual griping and gossiping. The result of always finding fault with God, and Moses, was the judgment of death and wandering 40 additional years in the wilderness. Let this be a lesson to each of us to avoid complaining too much about the ways of the Lord and submit to His will for our lives. Today, rejoice in what the Lord has done for you instead of complaining about what you think He should have done.

Halloween–Death, Darkness, Divination

What could be less innocuous than a trip to my local pharmacy to get a flu shot? There to greet me, right inside the entrance, was a six-foot mannequin of a witch; hence, the selfie above. Further inside, it seemed that the whole store had set aside normal drugstore fare of liniments and lotions in favor of ghosts and goblins. It’s that time of year, and death, darkness, and divination have taken over our culture. I’ve written extensively about Halloween in the past, detailing all its unsavory, demonic origins and associations. (Read my book LARSON’S BOOK OF SPIRITUAL WARFARE. To order CLICK HERE.) No point in detailing all those objections again here. If you have any doubts about the evil of Halloween, Google it. Or Wikipedia it. (“It is widely believed that many Halloween traditions originated from Celtic Harvest festivals which may have pagan roots, particularly the Gaelic festival Samhain . . .” – Paragraph 2, current Wikipedia entry.) Samhain? Once again, good ole Wikipedia: “Samhain was a time when the doorways to the Otherworld opened, allowing supernatural beings [sic, demons] and souls of the dead to come into our world.”

It is the casual invasion of the occult into our culture, during Halloween, that upsets me, this normalization of the demonic. Doubtless the management of Walgreens hasn’t a clue what the Bible says about witchcraft: “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.” It was a capital crime in the theocracy of Israel. It cost King Saul his kingdom and life! I was only seeking a shot in the arm to protect me from a virus at my neighborhood pharmacy, not an unwanted introduction to all things divinatory and devilish. Got it I did, all in the name of marketing the accoutrements of evil for one of the biggest sales periods of the year, second only to Christmas.

Halloween has never been an issue in our home. It’s always been verboten. No big deal. No whining. No, “Please, daddy, can we trick or treat, all the other kids are doing it?” Not even the pathetic substitute of a Christian “fall festival.” We’ve raised our three daughters in a spiritual warfare family. They know the reality of demons and the devil and want nothing to do with the slightest hint of compromise with such associations of evil. In our home, every day is the Lord’s day (Psalm 118:24). Away with all connections to witchcraft and occultism. What are you doing October 31?

An encouraging word: DON’T IMITATE EVIL

I’ve already taken a shot at Halloween in my blog, this week. But I can’t resist another salvo aimed at October 31. These are the words of 3 John 11: “Beloved, do not imitate what is evil.” I’m certain that the apostle didn’t have in mind a culture obsessed with all things dark and divinatory this time of year. His injunction was more generally applied to anything which hints of imitating (copying as a model) any kind of evil associations. We are not to mimic the ways of the world, especially when what they celebrate leads to spiritual bondage. Halloween aside, consider for a moment any compromises you may be making to “imitate” things which are unacceptable to God. Then, change your behavior and associations to emulate the will and ways of the Lord.

Satan’s Season

‘Tis the season re be satanic, the month of October, climaxed by the holiday of Halloween, the devil’s day. What better time to introduce a new satanic strategy from those folks over at the Satanic Temple. You know, the group that wanted to say satanic prayers to open Scottsdale, AZ City Council meetings (CLICK HERE to read my blog of February 22, 2016, “Satanism Triumphs.”); the same bunch who erected a hideous statue of the half-human, half-goat symbol of Satan in Detroit (CLICK HERE to read my blog of July 16, 2015, “Devil in Detroit.”); and the same folks who tried to place a larger-than-life image of Lucifer on state grounds in Oklahoma City. Is it any wonder that they have now succeeded in getting state grounds in Oklahoma City? Is it any wonder that they have now succeeded in getting an after-school Satan Club in Portland, Oregon schools? (The same city that holds an annual nude bicycle race.) The Satanic Temple argued that if Child Evangelism Fellowship could organize “Good News Clubs” for Christianity on public, school property that devil-worshippers should be accorded the same opportunity. Some politically correct idiot in the school system agreed with that demonic logic, and gave Satanists the OK.

If you’re a Satanist, spare me your convoluted logic about not believing in a real devil; about the use of Satan as an archetype of unbridled human passion; about your attempts to restore rationalism to culture and ban Christian superstition. I have a couple of simple questions for the Temple: How many hospitals have you built? To how many Third World countries have you brought medical teams and clean water? How many homes for the destitute and dying have you chartered, as did Mother Teresa? What great works of art can you claim to rival Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel? What majestic orchestrations have you composed to match Bach’s “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring?”

You Satanists, from Crowleyites to Lavey acolytes, from Thelemites to Setians, I’ve debated your top leaders and foremost spokespersons. Your logic is shallow, your purposes are devious, and your desire for public attention is pathetic. With a few exceptions, you are spoiled brats, lazy malcontents, and media-whores, selling yourselves to Satan for 15 minutes of dubious fame. Grow up. Get a real job. Get an education and contribute something to society. Learn a little about the Judeo-Christian foundation of Western Civilization. Congratulations, you have one month a year, and one day a year, Halloween, to celebrate your vacuous and vile philosophy. And if you don’t repent, you’ll have all eternity with a very real devil who will be your companion in torment.

An encouraging word: BE OF ONE MIND IN CHRIST

In the third chapter of his first Epistle, verse 8, Peter exhorts Christians to be “be of one mind.” Wow, that’s a tall order. Unanimity among Christians? It’s possible, but only if we set our egos and theological pet peeves aside. Peter goes on to give a clue how harmony can be achieved: “love as brothers.” Loving one another in spite of our differences. That’s the key. Today, I challenge you to connect with a Christian who doesn’t go to your church, and who may not see eye to eye with you theologically. Make a friend of them and pursue the goal of being of “one mind” with the other believer in Christ. You may light a fire that will spread to others.

Deliverance of a Doctor

Can a doctor have demons? Yes. Can a teacher, lawyer, professor, or pastor have demons? Yes, yes, yes, yes. In my one-on-one Personal Spiritual Encounter session, I deal with people of all professions, from the most-schooled to the least-educated. All ages. All races. All genders, yes even some who aren’t sure. You’d be amazed at who seeks me out. People from Hollywood and politics. Buddhists, Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims, and almost every religious viewpoint on earth. Individuals from almost every nation, many of those outside the USA by Skype. When it comes to needing deliverance, there is no stereotype. Anyone can have a demon, and when that person is tormented and they know they need an exorcist, who’re you gonna call?

But back to doctors. I mention that because the medical profession is held in such high esteem. You’ve probably heard the sarcastic comment about someone being an M.D., “medical deity.” Doctors know so much that the rest of us don’t. They toss around multi-syllable, diagnostic words as casually as the ordinary person orders a pizza. Most folks couldn’t imagine such a person having an evil spirit. But like anyone, a highly trained physician can have resident evil and still skillfully function on the job. Just like some pastors have demons and still preach.

I recently did an exorcism on a doctor. And this individual wasn’t the first from this highly-regarded profession. The person I speak of knew how to cure others, but he couldn’t fix himself. He suffered from multiple physical issues, some debilitating. He barely made it to the session he was so weak. Yet when his demons manifested, he became so violent that I, and two people assisting me, could barely keep things under control A blood-covenant demon of human sacrifice went back 20 generations. The result was that this doctor himself was dying from a whole series of maladies with names I could barely pronounce. After a long intensive battle with evil, he was set free AND HEALED! He walked from the room a completely different person.

This doctor found an answer to his physical suffering. Whoever you are, whatever your education or standing in life, you can have demons, and you can be set free in the name of Jesus. Satan is no respecter of your intelligence or social standing. Anyone can have a hidden, ancestral curse they know nothing about. This curse may be destroying them mentally and physically. The only way to know you are free from such oppression is to go through the process of curse-breaking and deliverance. Get our books such as CURSE BREAKING, JEZEBEL, DEMON-PROOFING PRAYERS, and DEALING WITH DEMONS. (To order CLICK HERE.) And call today to schedule a Skype or in-person Encounter. Confront the evil that may be hiding inside you, or someone you love. Destroy your demons before your demons destroy you!

An encouraging word: CHRIST IS OUR PEACE

The world is seeking peace. Individuals are doing yoga and meditating to find peace. Others take drugs, both prescription and psychoactive recreational drugs. All in the effort to find peace. Ephesians 2:14 makes a simple, and remarkable, declaration: “He Himself is our peace.” Peace is not just a state of mind. Peace is not just the cessation of conflict. Peace is a person, and that person is God’s Son, Jesus Christ. His indwelling presence does more than bring peace by the forgiveness of sins. When He abides within the soul of an individual, that person has peace because of His presence. If you are seeking peace, Christ is your peace. Invite Him into your heart, the Prince of Peace, and you will be peaceful.

Eulogy For an Exorcist

He was known as “the Pope’s exorcist.” Father Gabriele Amorth performed exorcisms for the Rome Diocese of the Catholic church. In fact, as he told me personally when I met him and toured his facility, several popes sent their toughest cases of demonic possession to him. Fr. Amorth was a blunt man who condemned Harry Potter, called yoga a work of Satan, and declared, “I’m not afraid of the devil. The devil is afraid of me.” He died a few weeks ago on September 16 at 91 years of age.

He was gracious with his time when I met with him, signing my collector’s edition of an actual 1733 hand-calligraphy edition of “The Rituale Romanum,” the Catholic ritual of exorcism (Our International School of Exorcism has two courses devoted to understanding this ritual and the history of exorcism in the Catholic church. To enroll CLICK HERE.) He showed Laura and me his private chamber where prayers for deliverance from demons were offered. With no one but a few nuns to help him, he showed me the gurney and nylon straps he used to tie down violent cases. After a lengthy conversation he offered to bless both of us, a deeply moving moment. When he finished he gave us a smile and said, “You have no demons, only angels.”

As a Protestant, I do exorcisms a little differently. Understandably, we diverged on some theological issues. But my conversation with Fr. Amorth left no doubt that we both serve the same Lord and fight the same devil. One has to admire and respect what this dear man of God did so faithfully for so long, even when he faced considerable opposition in his own Church. I am saddened to see him depart, but his war with demons is now over. He leaves that mission to those of us who are called to continue where he left off. May we diligently carry on the work of our Savior who declared in the Great Commission (Mark 16:15-18), “In my name you will cast out demons.”

An encouraging word: THE GOSPEL IS EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE

The Great Commission of Christ in Mark 16 contains a remarkable footnote in verse 20: “And they went out and preached everywhere.” EVERYWHERE! That’s true Christianity. Sadly, today the spreading of the gospel has often been left to well-marketed megachurches or slickly-produced Christian TV shows. But in the beginning of the church it was everyone, everywhere who told people about Jesus. You, my friend are “everyone” if you claim Christ as your Savior. And “everywhere” is your leisure, your labor, and everything in between. Today, wherever you are, tell someone about Jesus.
