Dealing with Demons Part 2

As a society, we listen to the opinions of cable news pundits who fan the flames of fear and give few answers. We observe court psychiatrists on both sides of the insanity defense divide. We’re told that some psychotic episode detached the killer from reality, or that a narcissistic, self-focused outlook prevented the murderer from understanding the consequences of his actions. But inside we know that something so bad must have its roots in a dimension outside the realm of ordinary human existence. Something diabolical, something supernatural, something too debased for rational minds to grasp must have influenced, even overpowered, the thinking of individuals we classify as deranged mass murderers.

Even when preachers follow up such hideous happenings with comments like, “This was demonic,” or “Satan did this,” they often don’t really mean what they say. Modern theology and evangelical thinking have distanced themselves from the idea that the devil and demons play any kind of significant role in human behavior. Part of the problem is that, if they took Satan seriously, what would they really do about it? By and large they’ve expunged the idea of casting out demons with any kind of frequency. Exorcism just isn’t an option. What’s left but to minimize the role of evil spirits and relegate their intervention in human affairs to infrequent at best?

Unthinkable behaviors are correctable, if you have the right diagnosis. I audaciously claim, after decades of ministering exorcism and deliverance to tens of thousands of people, that spiritual forensics are possible. Yes, you can actually spot the fingerprint of Satan, and you can determine if any action or behavior is essentially demonically motivated. You can crack the code on Satan’s schemes and reveal the clandestine evil machinations that are at work. Wouldn’t it be a wonderful thing if you personally could crack that code with friends and loved ones?

Wouldn’t it bring comfort to understand what’s behind their inconsistent actions and to know how to pray for them and minister to them? Being able to identify the fingerprint of Satan would revolutionize Christian counseling and inner healing ministries. And it would radically change the lives of those you love and care about.

An encouraging word: DOCTRINES OF DEMONS

There are many diabolical beliefs all around us. Cults. New Age. False Christian sects. Other religions, such as Islam. Spiritual error is everywhere, but we shouldn’t be surprised. The apostle Paul warned Timothy (1 Timothy 4:1) this would happen. Furthermore, Paul warned that these errant teachings would actually come from evil spirits, “doctrines of demons.” We must all walk daily in God’s Word to avoid being thus deceived. Beware lest you “depart from the faith.” Take adequate time today to fill your heart and mind with Scripture and God’s truth.

Dealing with Demons

The below is adapted from the Introduction to “Dealing with Demons.”

The title is simple enough, but there is nothing simple about this book. It’s a book I’ve always wanted to write. It’s all new material, not duplicated in any of my other books. It’s aimed at pastors, counselors, deliverance ministers, and anyone who has an interest in setting people free from demonic forces. After having written 34 previous books, how is it possible to write nearly 200 pages of all new information? Easy. The topic of inner healing/deliverance/exorcism is inexhaustible. My desire in writing DEALING WITH DEMONS is to provide a realistic and balanced approach to setting the captives free.

I begin the book by emphasizing that Jesus spent time ministering to people. The Sermon on the Mount lasted so long that food had to be supernaturally provided. The Syrophoenician woman had her faith tested at length by the Lord. The “woman at the well” encounter was a long conversation as Jesus lovingly drew out the facts of her life. Jesus took time. He touched the feelings of people and thus illustrated to us how to elicit the deepest needs of those requiring ministry. In some ways, Christ was the first psychotherapist, using a process of listening and talking to bring hope and healing to emotional disorders. Certainly, Jesus ultimately intervened supernaturally and miraculously. But preceding that, it’s obvious that He met people right where they were psychologically, even when they were in the midst of intense pain.

And Jesus asked a lot of questions. “What is your name?” he inquired of the demon Legion (Mark 5:9) “How long has this been happening to him?” (Mark 9:21 — asked of the man with a demon possessed son who tried to kill himself.) Christ knew the answers to these question. He was fully God incarnate. Why did He ask? In order to demonstrate that deliverance from demons isn’t always an act of power-packed intervention. More often it is a painstakingly slow process of well-asked questions and much-analyzed answers. Like good Christian counseling, the path to freedom from spiritual bondage is paved with listening skills and Spirit-led inquires. It is in this give-and-take that the keys to winning in spiritual warfare are often unveiled.

An encouraging word: ALL SHALL WORSHIP GOD

“All the ends of the world . . . shall worship before You.” That prophetic statement of Psalm 22:27 is quite remarkable. So few, compared to worldwide population, bow before the Lord today. But God’s Word is true. And who will it be that kneels before the Ancient of Days? The nation of Israel, as improbable as that may seem now. The unsaved of all the ages, including atheists, the ungodly, and evil men of all sorts. Most important, the redeemed will bow. Better to bow now by choice then be forced to bow in judgment at the end of time.

Stop ignoring exorcism!

I’m tired of PC Christianity in America. Are you? I saw a report recently entitled, “Demons are Real and They Oppress People.” Now, you’d think I’d be happy at that headline Not so fast. The Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) aired a testimony of an African woman, tormented by demonic images at night, who eventually found the Lord. Why wouldn’t I like that? I do. CBN is a great group. Pat Robertson and his people have done a wonderful work for the Lord for decades. I rejoice in this testimony, but it’s what it didn’t say that concerns me. There is no mention of this woman being “possessed,” and perhaps she wasn’t. Or maybe CBN didn’t tell the whole story and left the account warm and fuzzy by using the word “oppressed.” I was touched by the story, but wondered what I wasn’t hearing.

Maybe I’m just naturally suspicious because I’m fed up with evangelical Christians soft-peddling what the devil does. Why couldn’t the headline have been, “Demons are Real and they POSSESS People.” Picky? Perhaps, but take this example. I was recently in the midst of an exorcism with a woman immersed in Bible Belt Christianity. A powerful Jezebel demon was manifesting, speaking through the woman and describing what it was doing to destroy her and her family. In the midst of the demon’s declaration, the woman’s own consciousness re-emerged, and she said, “This can’t be happening. I’m a spirit-filled Christian and Christians can’t be possessed by demons.” The exorcism stopped then and there. There was no way of proceeding. Demons had previously taken over her mind and body, and they were detailing their plans of destruction. I was attempting to get the upper hand to cast them out, when . . .” Her bad theology cut the exorcism short.

As I listened to the story of the woman from Africa I concluded one of three things: a) She didn’t have demons and truly was only attacked from the outside, b) CBN was playing the story gently and didn’t want to ruffle any feathers by suggesting a Christian could be demonized, or c) the woman was possessed and somehow got free in ways CBN wasn’t aware of. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt, but don’t you buy into the idea of what I call “exorcism lite.” Demons can and do “possess” Christians, if by possession you mean the demonic ability to psycho-neurologically speak and function through the faculties of their host. An encouraging word: REBUKE SHARPLY

It’s not polite to speak the truth in culture today. The pressure to be politically correct all around us often exchanges honesty for compromise. The apostle Paul would have none of this. Writing to Titus, he said of those who subverted the truth of God, “Rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith” (Titus 1:13). That’s bold. It wouldn’t fly in most Christian circles today. Obviously, we must be careful about taking Paul’s advice when we’re angry or arguing over minor matters of doctrinal interpretation. But sometimes, when the Holy Spirit leads, a “sharp” rebuke is in order. Make today a day when there are no corners cut in your Christianity, even if it means a stern rebuke to those who would lead you into sin.
