Return of the King

NBA Cleveland Cavalier’s fan celebrates.

 

Millions of Christians around the world are waiting for the Rapture and the return of King Jesus. But for residents of Cleveland, Ohio, the rapture has already taken place and the King has returned. Make that King James. LeBron James, more recently of the NBA’s Miami Heat, has returned to the where he started his NBA career seven years ago. The rust-belt city finally has something to cheer about. The man some believe is currently the best basketball player in the world will be playing next season for the Cleveland Cavaliers. In the era of free-agency, that’s sports. No player stays anywhere for long if enough money calls him elsewhere. And LeBron James is no exception, despite his publicity agent’s spin on James’ expressed desire to return to his roots and raise his family where, as he put it, “there’s no better place to grow up.”

I don’t have a dog in this hunt, so que sera sera. My issue is with the messianic mentality attached to LeBron. Look at the photo above? The outstretched arms of atonement. The not-so-subtle heading of the poster, “The KING has returned.” The weekend edition of The Wall Street Journal declaring the “Second Coming.” This is all about sports, and I suppose some fans are entitled to a bit of hyperbole. But the blasphemous overtones are too much for me to take. The fact that a mere basketball player — A BASKETBALL PLAYER!! — could be compared in the same breath with the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords, the Great I Am, the Creator, the Logos, the Lord and Savior of all mankind is sickening. And it is a sign of how far we’ve gone as a culture to tolerate such sacrilege.

 

An encouraging word: BLASPHEMYBlasphemy. America used to have laws on the books against it. Today it is common fare in everyday life. God’s named is damned. Jesus Christ has become a curse word. But reviling The Lord is not a light matter. Revelation 13:6 tells us that this sin is one of Lucifer’s final acts of rebellion against God. Cursing God is one way to align with Lucifer, and that is a fatal spiritual decision. If you mimic the Anti-Christ’s actions at the end of the ages, you will be risking your own soul in the here and now.

Deliver Us From Evil

It was a terrible way to spend a hot, summer afternoon, in a movie theater watching a Hollywood horror film about exorcism, but, hey, someone has to do it. And since I am The Real Exorcist, why not me? I’ve consulted on a lot of movies like this, but I never got a call from the producers of this one. It’s just as well. No way could I have encouraged anyone to see this grotesque and twisted portrayal of expelling demons. For starters, the hunk hero is a cop (remotely based on a real life story) who is a lapsed, profanity-spouting Catholic who has abandoned his faith. He doesn’t believe in the supernatural but comes around at the end of the film after witnessing the paranormal on steriods. The faux priest who does the exorcism is a whisky drinking, cigarette smoking, lustful, young (of course good-looking) minister who just narrowly missed getting defrocked for getting a secret girlfriend pregnant. The priest tells the cop that he has the “gift of spiritual discernment,” a mockery in itself since all the policemen experiences are psychic impressions in the midst of a morally bankrupt life.

 

The priest does have down the ritual of exorism, sort of, except for losing his cool at one point and throwing the F-bomb into the ancient, sacred text. Yes a cross is used, even the blood of Christ is mentioned, but it’s in the midst of so much gore its holy significance is marginalized by putrefying corpses. I guess this is Tinseltown’s way of making the Catholic faith look cool. In the end, the man of God is almost outdone by the blood drooling, animal snarling, demented demon-carrier. Good triumphs over evil eventually; but the film viewer has to wade through so many uses of the Lord’s name in vain and the F-word employed ubiquitously as a default adjective so many times that the end of the movie seems to warrant a moral shower-cleansing afterwards, rather than a Eucharist celebration. It is an exorcism movie but the rite is almost incidental to the fright factor of oozing guts and maggot infested bodies. It’s The Exorcist on meth with none of the green-pea vomit.

An encouraging word: DELIVER US FROM EVIL“Deliver us from evil,” The Lord taught us to pray (Matthew 6:13). It’s a phrase that has made its way into our culture; even Hollywood repeats it. But the majority of those who say it have no clear definition of evil. To most, evil is some vague sense of injustice, writ large by the deeds of a Hitler or Pol Pot. But evil is much more than the deranged actions of a dictator. Evil is the emanation of personal malignancy from an actual being, Satan. Without the devil there would be no horror movies, no Stephen King thrillers. We will never banish “evil” until we face its source with God’s power.

Lazy Americans?

I’ve always suspected that Americans are a bit lazy. Look at the obesity problem. Consider the massive growth of mindless entertainment from extreme fighting to reality TV. Think about who our heroes are. Many are famous only for being famous. A new set of statistics out this week from the American Time Use Survey blasts the myth that Americans are overworked and overwhelmed. Here is the reality. Americans . . .

  • Sleep an average of 8.48 hours a day (9.34 hours on weekends).
  • Spend 5.26 hours a day in leisure activities, mostly watching TV.
  • Even the employed with small children manage 3.44 hours of leisure a day.

Now do you think my assessment is unreasonably harsh? Of course, I realize that YOU aren’t one of these statistics. But just in case you find yourself too often hitting the snooze button or watching yet another rerun of “Real Housewives” of whatever, consider these stats.

  • One in six Americans is at risk for hunger.
  • One in five female children has been a victim of reported sexual abuse.
  • 28% of all youth ages 14 to 17 have been sexually abused.
  • Seven million children live in families with severe partner violence.
  • 500 women are raped or sexually assaulted every day.

The question I ask is this: With all the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs around us, why are we sleeping on the job? Suppose you slept 2-3 hours less every week. What constructive activity could you accomplish with that time? What if you swore off entertainment TV for a week? How much of that time could you invest in the life of some hurting person in need? Why not ask your priest or pastor what needs in the church could use a helping hand? Remember the words of Proverbs 6:10:A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest — and poverty will come on you like a bandit.

An encouraging word: SEPARATED FROM GODIsaiah 59:2 warns, “Your iniquities have separated you from your God.” Some people complain that God doesn’t hear their prayers. They gripe that some terrible thing happened and accuse the Almighty by saying, “Where was God? He should have done something to stop my miserly.” There is no simple answer that suffices as response to all these objections against the Lord, but a better idea is to look in the mirror instead shaking one’s fist at the heavens. When your petitions seem to go unanswered or life’s misery seems unwarranted, the problem could be you. Perhaps it is your own sin and rebellion that has prevented the Lord from acting on your behalf.

Satanic Mass in OKC

Oklahoma City, best known for Will Rogers, oil, and a successful NBA team, is now in an uproar over Satanists in their city. Earlier this year, Satanists planned a public Black Mass at Harvard University. (Blog dated May 13, 2014, “Satan Goes to Harvard.” To read CLICK HERE.) Protesters were successful in getting that event to be canceled. The latest battle over the public right to celebrate Satan is being waged over the scheduled satanic ritual planned for September 21 at the Oklahoma City Civic Center Music Hall by a group calling itself Dakhma of Angra Mainyu [“the destroyer of good, conveyor of death and disease”]. (Their web site boldly declares, “I stopped fighting my inner demons. We’re on the same side now.”) The spokesperson for the Music Hall says it’s not her job to determine whether the event should be canceled. “That’s not for us to judge,” Jennifer Lindsey-McClintock stated. “We are a city-funded facility  . . . we must operate in a position of neutrality.” The city assures citizens that there were will no nude woman on the altar, as is customary in such a demonic ritual.

 

So the sacrilegious ceremony will likely go forward, but don’t expect a full house for the $15 per ticket event. The auditorium where the Mass will be held only seats 92 so the main benefit for the devil is likely to be the publicity this generates, not general public interest in the meeting. What also makes this matter a little messy is the revelation that the head honcho of OKC Satanism is a registered sex offender

 

What should the good Christian Citizens of Thunderland (NBA inside joke) do? Pray for the pervert who  is behind this. Quietly do everything legally to get it canceled. (No sense in sitting back and allowing even one person to attend and thus become potentially demonized.) Then, sit back and refuse to give the Dakhma a further public platform to spew their demonic dribble. Will Rogers, the city’s most noted favorite son, is famous for having said, “I never met a person I didn’t like.” If he were alive today and could attend the OKC satanic meeting in September, he might change his mind.

An encouraging word: OVERCOME EVIL WITH GOODWith all the evil in the world today it’s easy to get a bit discouraged. The forces of moral disintegration seem to triumph on every side. The story is told of Mother Teresa going to a shopkeeper to get some bread to be donated for starving children. The man reportedly spat in her face. She replied, “That’s what you do to me. But what are you going to do for the children?” Humbled, the man gave her bread. Romans 12:21 puts it this way: Overcome evil with good. The next time you are disrespected, try the biblical way of handling the situation.

America the Movie

When was the last time you attended a movie and the audience stood and clapped at the end? Or you watched elderly men with tears in their eyes and their hands over their hearts as the credits rolled to “The Star Spangled Banner?” Okay, I saw the film this last weekend in Arizona, a fairly conservative state. Perhaps if I had seen the same movie in Rhode Island or Vermont, the cheers might have been jeers. But you gotta see this movie. It’s the liberal-progressive politicians’ worst nightmare well done, especially on the big screen. Plus, we took our whole family. Surprise, surprise, it’s a film the whole family can see. No it didn’t crack the top ten. As if proving the point of the movie, the decadence and loss of exceptionalism in our country, the top films were: “Transformers” (real intellectual stimulation), “Tammy” (don’t get me started on America’s obesity epidemic), “Deliver us from Evil” (a faux exorcism horror film), and it goes downhill from there.

 

Dinesh D’Souza, an East Indian immigrant, targets two problems with our current social and political climate: 1) The shaming of success as if those who get rich are somehow immoral, and 2) the lie that America is a selfish nation abusing world peace, when in fact we have fought, bled and spent billions of $ without a hint of conquest. Though Lionsgate Entertainment distributed the film, most of Hollywood is aghast at its message. Variety magazine, one of the film industry’s bibles, said that the movie reinforces the “darkest suspicions of its target audience.” Excuse me. Those folks standing and cheering weren’t mindless idiots, they were appreciative of the patriotism celebrated in the movie. Admittedly there have been some legal and personal struggles in D’Souza’s life. He alludes to this in the film. But his work, the movie, stands apart from this as a powerful rebuke to the far left in America, who care little about what the world would be like, in the movie’s byline, “if there were no America.”

An encouraging word: PRAY IN THE MORNINGWhat would the devil do to you if he had the chance? What if the grace of God, and His guardian angels, were withdrawn for but a moment? Have you ever considered what evil the powers of darkness would bring upon you? Perhaps knowing how risky our daily life can be is the reason the Psalmist (5:3) declared, “In the morning, O Lord . . . I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation.” As I wrote these words, this morning, I paused to pray and do exactly what this verse suggests. Why don’t you do the same?

Robert Downey Jr.’s Curse

Just as the much-addicted and troubled actor was beginning to get his own act together, we now learn that Robert Downey Jr.’s son, Indio, has been arrested on drug charges. A representative of the famous actor said of the star’s son, “Unfortunately there’s a genetic component to addiction and Indio has likely inherited it.” Language has a colloquialism for it: “Like father, like son.” Or “A chip off the old block.” However it’s described, or whatever hereditary concepts are used to express it, the phenomenon of trans-generational, replicated behavior is evidence of a generational curse. In the 1990s before his current comeback, the elder Downy had to undergo substance abuse treatment several times, including one at a California State Prison. Supposedly clean now for a dozen plus years, one has to wonder how he is handling the anguish of seeing his son go down the same destructive road.

 

To correct addictive behavior there are important functions to be played by addiction counselors, medical doctors, and therapist who specialize in this area. They all make contributions, but the important questions to be asked are:

A) Will secular treatment programs have long range success without a spiritual component?

B) Will successive generations suffer the same fate without deliverance being a factor?

 

The answer to “B” seems to be a resounding, “No!” If the elder Downy has turned his life around without God or the breaking of generational curses, that’s great, at least in a temporal sense. But whatever help he did get probably didn’t address the matter of breaking generational curses. Hence his son, who was a pre-pubescent child while Downey Jr. was struggling with addiction, followed his dad’s generational propensities. Indio is an adult now and has to deal with his own issues, but I pray someone reaches him, turns him to Christ, and then breaks the curse of addiction on that bloodline so yet another generation won’t be at risk. 

An encouraging word: CRY OUT TO GODWe are an amazingly connected world. I’m not bad at being a techie, but I’m humbled watching my three teenagers almost instantly navigate between Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Facetime, Skype, Google+, text, and emails. But is anyone out there really listening? Yes, sometimes, but often it’s an exercise in vicarious connectedness. And what if they were in real need? To whom would this internet generation cry out to and get a comforting answer? “Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God,” King David implored (Psalm 5:2). He called to God because he knew there was someone there who was really listening and really cared. Try that with Facebook and see how far you get.

Satan’s Motley Crue

They’re at it again. They say for one last time. The bad boys of heavy metal rock-‘n’-roll are taking a last stand. Twenty years ago I was on nationwide radio with my TALKBACK WITH BOB LARSON radio show bashing them almost every other day. I guess this is my last chance. The band says they are embarking on their finial tour, titled “All Bad Things Must Come to an End.” One can only hope this will indeed be their swan song to debauchery and decadence. Maybe they are just too old for the drugs and groupies, sex tapes and trashed hotel rooms. In spite of their perennial bad-boy image, thanks to selling 75 million records, they are now investing in arena football teams and a Lamborghini dealership. So much for rock rebellion. Got to admit that’s a long way from their time spent in prison, brushes with the law, and cocaine and heroin addictions. Remember when Vince Neil was driving DUI, crashed and killed the drummer for another band, then ended up with only 18 days in jail after being charged with vehicular manslaughter? Nikki Sixx, of the band, nearly died from a heroin overdose. Another early band member was convicted for smuggling 40,000 pounds of pot. And let’s not forget that their 1983 album Shout at the Devil featured a Satan-worshiping pentagram on the front.

 

I could go on for pages about their evil escapades. That’s old news. Here’s the sum of the matter. The scene they helped spawn in the 80s and 90s led many youth down a  demonic trail, due to Crue’s evil imagery. Thirty plus years later, those rebellious teenage fans are now parents with kids of their own. And the next generation has been victimized by broken homes and the substance abuse of their parents. I spend much of my time in counseling and exorcism picking up the spiritually shattered pieces of these lives. That’s not to say we’ve gone to hell-in-a-hand-basket because of one rock band; but Crue was a piece of the cultural puzzle, a very big piece. They may be on their final tour, but some of their fans have already taken a final tour to alcoholism, drug dependency, and an early death.

An encouraging word: WHAT ARE YOU SOWING?“The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction,” Paul warned in Galatians 6:8. Some sow early in life with youthful pleasure of addictions and immorality. Others continue with evil in mid-life with destructive choices, seeking to regain a sense of youthfulness. Others suffer in golden years with the consequences of terrible decisions early in life. Whenever it catches up to you doesn’t matter. It will catch up. But there is more to this verse. It continues; “The one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.”

Elton John’s Theology?

Pop singer-songwriter-pianist-superstar Elton John created a stir this week when he expounded his beliefs about Jesus and same-sex marriage. John has been in a gay relationship with partner David Furnish since 1993 and Elton declared his homosexuality in 1988. It’s not surprising that he supports gay marriage, but it’s how he worded his comments that caused the controversy. He declared his distaste for the Catholic Church’s opposition to gay marriage by saying, “These are old and stupid things . . . If Jesus Christ was alive today, I cannot see him, as the Christian person that he was and the great person that he was, saying this could not happen. He was all about love and compassion and forgiveness and trying to bring people together, and that is what the Church should be about.”

Where do we start to digest that mish-mash? What’s at issue here isn’t same-sex marriage; that’s now legal in Britain. It’s John’s theology that is confused, and that is symptomatic of how little the Christian message is understood today, especially in England. First, Jesus wasn’t a “Christian person.” He wasn’t even a Christian. When Christ lived on earth there was no Christianity. That came later. Second, he wasn’t a “great person.” He was and is God Eternal. Big difference. Finally, the Church is not just about love and compassion. Those are values that the Church embraces, but the Church is about saving souls. When it comes to theology, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck . . . well you get the idea. Sir John (yes, he’s been knighted by the Queen), you’ve written some great songs and our collective consciousness has been embedded with your melodies from “Can you Feel the Love” to “Rocket Man.” But leave the theology to theologians.

An encouraging word: BACK TO BASICSSo few today know so little about what Christianity is really all about. A lot of blame for that is the pulpit, particularly some media ministers. Each one has their own shtick, a hobby horse they ride with enthusiasm. It could be prosperity, prophecy, miracles, or whatever is getting donations at the time. Remember the Y2K debacle? Now it’s either the blood moons, bar codes, or google glasses that are ushering in the Apocalypse. Take your pick. We need to get back to basics and do what Jesus did: save souls, heal the brokenhearted and cast out demons. And we need to do so with “simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom” (2 Corinthians 1:12).

Real Spiritual Warfare

May I share a frustration with you? Case in point: I was reading a prominent Christian web site a few days ago and saw an article entitled, “The Reality of Spiritual Warfare.” I thought to myself, “Good, at last, a mainstream ministry taking on the devil.” The article began by lamenting that too few Christians know about spiritual warfare. Amen. I kept reading, paragraph after paragraph. This lengthy article was an excellent biblical explanation regarding the origin of evil in the universe, but only once was the word “demon” used. Even Satan was seldom mentioned.  Phrases like “invisible battle raging” and “defend ourselves” and “the forces of evil.” No reference to exorcism. The word deliverance never occurred. Lots of Bible verses but not a single passage about Christ casting out demons. It was all evangelical cliques, politically correct language, and theological pleasantries. The writer said, “It is time that we, as the children of God, began living as strong soldiers of the Cross.” Yes, AND DO WHAT????

 

I’m sure the writer meant well, and I don’t want to be harsh or judgmental, but let’s get real. Articles like this are just words that do little to make demons tremble. In reality, there was nothing about genuine spiritual warfare in this missive. REAL SPIRITUAL WARFARE is detecting, confronting, and casting out demons! Polite prayers and strong sentiments do not set people free. I am glad this writer made an effort to broach the topic, but what was the point? DEMON PROOFING PRAYERS (ORDER HERE). Real spiritual warfare is putting on the armor of God, invading Satan’s kingdom, and taking authority over demons in the Name of Jesus. Anything less is comfortable cop out!

An encouraging word: PUT ON THE ARMOREphesians 6:12 tells us to “put on the full armor of God.” Exactly, what does that mean? To most Christian’s it’s a polite metaphor to spend an extra minute in prayer or read a couple more Bible verses in a devotional. But read all of the chapter and you’ll see it counsels being involved in real action against demonic forces. Armor isn’t worn to stay in the trenches or lounge back at the base. Armor is for engaging the enemy on the field of battle, offensively challenging the opposition. If our Enemy is the devil, we don’t wear spiritual armor to sing another praise chorus. So, put on the armor of the Lord and start aggressively taking back the territory Satan has occupied in your life.
